History of the aircraft:

Italian industry has failed to develop a forked, liquid-cooled engine giving at least 1,200 horsepower since the 1930s. All attempts ended in failure, so during the war the purchase of inline engines in Germany helped. Alongside their purchase, licensed production was also arranged by the Fiat factory, for the Daimler-Benz 601 and 605 engines.

Italian engine designers found this difficult to cope with, and so sought to develop a powerful air-cooled inline engine. The Isotta-Fraschini engine factory was working on an inverted forked twelve cylinder Delta engine that gave 840 horsepower. This was not enough for a modern fighter, but the engine-designers "doubled" this engine (simply put, they turned the second engine 180° and mated it to the lower one). This created a four-cylinder engine with cylinders arranged in an X-shape, which could theoretically achieve twice the power. Of course, everything was much, much more complicated than that, and the power output of the first Zeta engine was only 1,150 horsepower, and that was quite low in 1941.

The aircraft designers were very cautious about this engine, the complex cooling, exhaust pipe run-out, difficult maintenance etc. were a warning against fitting it into the airframe. In 1942, the engine builders of the Isotta-Fraschini factory presented a second version of this engine which, thanks to a supercharging two-speed compressor, managed to maintain a power of 1,200 hp up to an altitude of 6,000 meters. In addition, for next year, the engine builders have promised a 1,500 hp version.
The designers of Reggiane had already taken this on board and had first modified one aircraft for this engine, Re.2001, rebadged for this purpose as Re.2004, but the work was not completed and the whole project was stopped. The designers of the second part of the company started to build, or rather modify, the aircraft. The Caproni-Vizzola F.6M prototype, originally designed for the R.A. 1050 RC 58 Tifone engine (DB-605), was modified for installation. Fitting the Zeta was a rather tough design nut to crack, the engine was larger and so the transitions between the engine cowling and fuselage had to be modified. The heavy water cooling was eliminated but sufficient cooling air flow had to be ensured.

The aircraft was flown in mid-August 1943 and it soon became apparent that the rear cylinders of the engine were getting very hot, so all flights were conducted in close proximity to the airfield. After the surrender of Italy, few more flights were made and the aircraft was scrapped.
