SOV - GP-9 (kanonový podvěsný kontejner)

GP-9

The GP-9 cannon container was developed based on experience from the Vietnam War for the MiG-21PFM fighter aircraft, which was to be retrofitted with cannon armament. The container was suspended under the fuselage (the central braking shield was locked in a fixed position when the container was suspended) and contained a GS-23 cannon with a supply of 250 rounds.

The Indian Air Force also used the GP-9 containers on its MiG-21FL aircraft. Its ranks were then engaged in the Bangladesh War in December 1971. The only verified shoot down of a Pakistani aircraft assisted by a GS-23 gun in a GP-9 container occurred on 12 December 1971 over the waters of the Gulf of Kutch. A pair of Pakistani Starfighters then attacked Jamnagar airfield, but a cash pair from 47 Squadron managed to take off in time. In the ensuing dogfight, the lead F-104A piloted by W/Cdr M.L. Middlecoat was shot down by a cannon (after both R-3S guns failed) (although he successfully ejected over the waters of the Gulf, he was eventually killed - presumably eaten by sharks). A second Pakistani Starfighter managed to escape.
