Sikorsky S-37

At the end of 1926, the Sikorsky company began work on a twin-engine machine for a transatlantic flight, which he wanted to perform René Fonck . In the spring of 1927, the aircraft was ready, it was a biplane with two Gnome-Rhône Jupiter engines and the lower wing of a smaller span than the upper. Unusual (although at this time it was difficult to find a standard ...) was a rudder, double, located on a horizontal tail surface, with a third placed on the fuselage behind it. While the "Ville de Paris" machine was tested, on May 21, 1927, the crossing of the Atlantic took place Charles Lindberg ha Fonck gave up his plans. The aircraft was sold to American International Airways, converted to an 18-seater transport with Pratt & amp; Whitney R-1690 Hornet with an output of 391 kW and deployed on the route from Santiago de Chile to Buenos Aires until 1930, when it was scrapped.

In 1927, a second piece was built, marked S-37-2 or S-37B. It was created in financial cooperation with the company Consolidated for the US Air Force competition for a new bomber. The S-37B was promoted under the name Consolidated-Sikorsky Guardian. This second machine differed in a modified bow with the position of a bomber, who also controlled the front moving machine gun, and on the back of the fuselage appeared the second usual range, whose shooter also had a third machine gun in the floor below. Part of the fuselage behind the elevator was removed and the third rudder also disappeared. He had Pratt & amp; Whitney R-1690 Hornet, and reached a top speed of 174 km/h. Load capacity, speed or range with competitors, Curtissu XB-2, Keystone XB-1B a The Fokker XLB-2, did not equalize, was almost half a ton heavier than expected and Consolidated refused to pay for the construction and terminated the cooperation. In 1929, it was rebuilt into a twenty-one-seater S-37-2 transport aircraft with 503 kW Hornet engines and eventually with Jupiter engines left over from the S-37-1, but probably remained in the factory. In 1934, it was rebuilt again, given a float landing gear and was to be used by a group of American pilots on a trip around the world. The flight from Chicago to Chicago was to take place in cooperation with the Russians and was designed to strengthen trade relations with the USSR. In 1934, however, the S-37-2 was destroyed in an accident at sea and the experiment failed.
