In 1919 the american army air force created fifteen categories, according to which marked their aircraft, three of them were a bombing - DB (daily bomber), NBS (night bomber, short distance) and NBL (night bomber, remote). 24. December 1920 the army ordered from the company Gallaudet machine, falling into the first of these categories and influenced by successful Junkersovými F.13. It was an all-metal single-engine low-wing very modern construction, which indicated a load capacity of 270 kg of bombs at a speed of up to 232 km/h. The first of the ordered two prototypes, the army took over 5. December, 1921, proved but to be nearly a ton heavier than was originally anticipated, and during ground tests with the deformed duralumin cover, aileron, so was not deemed safe for take-off and only served to stress tests. The second of the prototypes was completed as a substantially lightweight DB-1B, with a skeleton of welded tubes and the rear sections of the fuselage, parts of the wings and control surfaces coated canvas. The bombs were stored in the bomb bay located between the dorsal of the engine and the cockpit, in the bow was a fixed machine gun, Browning and in addition to moving the twin Lewis gunner he was one machine gun located in the floor. After thorough testing of this machine 1. August 1923 took off, there were but gradually other problems that were based on untested technology. flight tests were completed in may 1924, and because the problems failed to solve, a project of the DB-1 was terminated.
