History:
On February 17, 1931, Russian emigrant Alexander Nikolaevich Prokofiev-Seversky founded an aircraft factory. The new factory was named Seversky Aircraft Corporation. The first designer was Georgian Grigorashvili, who in 1932 designed a three-seat amphibian SEV-3, which was flown in 1933. In 1934 another Georgian emigrant A.M. Kartvelov (later Karveli) joined the company. The first aircraft designed by this later highly successful designer was a two-seat fighter designed for the USAAC. With this type, Seversky announced a competition for a standard fighter aircraft for the US Army Air Force. The aircraft was damaged in a cross-country flight, the competition was postponed, and Seversky was given the opportunity to quickly rebuild the aircraft into a single-seat design with the designation SEV-1XP, this aircraft could then be compared in competition (18 June 1935) with the Curtiss Hawk. More about the competition here. One path led to a single-seat fighter P-35 and the other, a two-seat fighter, continued to be pushed by Seversky.
He offered the original two-seat version of the fighter under the designation "Convoy Fighter" to the U.S. Army Air Forces, but they showed no interest and in 1936 the SEV-2PA version was released for export. Eventually, in 1937, twenty of them were purchased by the Japanese Naval Air Force, which at the time was looking for a suitable long-range fighter to escort its Mitsubishi G3M Nell bombers. The Japanese aircraft were designated A8V1[/b:aaaa] and flew operationally for a short time over China.
