Curtiss-Orenco Model D

At the end of the year 1918 offered an american air corps of its type D airline Ordnance Engineering Company of Long Island. It was one of the first fighter aircraft, developed purely on american territory. 16. October came an order for four prototypes, which were passed between January and October 1919. The fuselage was ply-wood, the wings were covered with canvas and powered is a French engine Hispano-Suiza H. The first of them was tested on the McCook Field in Dayton and his performances convinced and good control of the army to order 50 of serial machines. This contract but was given to the public competition, which won the company the Curtiss and 16. June 1920 was awarded a contract. That made certain design changes, mainly relating to the wings, which got balanced wings protruding through the wing. The first of them has been tested in flight 10. November 1920, and all the machines were included to 1. fighter group. One machine was experimentally fitted with French radiator Lamblin on the sides of the fuselage, further served to height tests with the engines. Prototože were the Curtiss-Orenco D ordered before the introduction of the marking system from the year 1921, in the army flew under the designation of the factory. Production in Curtissu but was found to be of poor quality and were soon discarded. In Orenca continued the development and created a model D2, which, however, was not successful, so the company got into trouble, which her ruin.
