Gallaudet PW-4

In 1921, the Gallaudet Aircraft Corporation, which had already created several interesting designs for the Navy, received an order for three prototypes of the PW-4, a two-plane, all-metal, water-cooled fighter aircraft. The wings used a Gallaudet T-12 airfoil similar to that used on the PW-1, chromvanadium steel spars, and were covered with duralumin sheet metal. The fuselage consisted of duralumin sheeting applied to a skeleton of stamped elements. It was the innovative but untested all-metal construction that proved fatal to the type. The first prototype, powered by a 261 kW Packard 1A-1237 engine, was delivered in October 1922 for testing at McCook Field, where in addition to static tests it was also tested in taxiing and perhaps made a few short jumps. However, the static tests showed serious problems in the design,so the PW-3 was judged unsuitable for flight tests and never really flew (the top speed is only calculated). Construction of the remaining prototypes was also discontinued. Gallaudet continued to build all-metal aircraft, and a year later the DB-1 bomber was built, but it too was not successful, and the company, thus lacking a successful product, eventually became part of Consolidated Aircraft.
