Těrlicko - Żwirkowisko
Memorial of Polish aviators Franciszek Żwirka and Stanislaw Wigura (Żwirkowisko).

In August 1932, pilot Lt. Franciszek Żwirko and mechanic ing. Stanisław Wigura, defending the colours of the Polish Air Force, won the prestigious international air race Challenge.
Shortly thereafter, on 11 September, during a flight to the Aviation Day in Prague, a strong gale caused their RWD-6 aircraft to malfunction and it crashed in the woods above Těrlick in the Kostelec district. Both pilots were killed in the crash.

At the site of the tragedy, called "Żwirkowisko", a chapel-mausoleum was built, two broken trees were preserved, and crosses were erected on the symbolic graves.
Until World War II, commemorative ceremonies were held here every year. During the occupation, however, the memorial was razed to the ground by the Germans. In 1950, a monument to the aviator by the sculptor A. Pelikán was placed on the site of the tragedy.

Currently, the Żwirkowisko is managed by the municipality of Těrlicko, and the site is cared for by members of the local group of the Polish Cultural and Social Union (PZKO) Těrlicko-Kostelec.
"Żwirkowisko has become a Polish national monument. Nearby, the Żwirki and Wigury House was built and houses a permanent exhibition commemorating the 1932 air tragedy and a restaurant.
