Douglas C-41A

The U.S. Air Force ordered a machine from Douglas on August 17, 1939, designated the C-41A. It was essentially a regular DC-3A, equipped with a 21-seat deluxe interior and Pratt & Whitney Twin Wasp engines. The designation could lead to the misconception that it was a successor to the C-41 ordered the year before. In its case, however, the machine was literally a composite of components from both the DC-2 and DC-3 series. What both machines had in common was their intended use - the personal transport of the highest officials of the US military. Therefore, the Air Force decided on the same type designation and differentiation only by the suffix A. Incidentally, this was the very first DC-3 to enter service with the U.S. armed forces - the famous Skytrains followed after it.

The Douglas was completed just four weeks after ordering and first flew on 11 September 1939. Three days later, it was delivered to Bolling Field in Washington, where it was assigned to the 1st Staff Squadron and served as the personal aircraft of the U.S. Secretary of War. After a few years, it was replaced in that role by newer stands and became a "regular" staff transport aircraft until it was retired in December 1945.
