General Bohuslav Fiala

He was born 29.1.1890 in Frenštát pod Radhoštěm. From 1900 to 1907 he studied at the higher realm in Holešov and then successfully graduated from the military academy in Vienna's New Town. In August 1910, he joined the Austro-Hungarian Army in the 35th Infantry Regiment in Přemyšl. During the First World War he took part in the fighting with the Russian army in Halych as an infantry lieutenant. On 22 March 1915, during the surrender of the surrounded fortress of Přemyšl, he was captured and taken to a prisoner of war camp.

In Samara, on 28 August 1918, he joined the Czechoslovak Legion in Russia and was assigned to the 9th Rifle Regiment. He served as an instructor in the non-commissioned officers' school, chief of staff of the group, later as an intelligence officer of the regiment and finally as a teacher of tactics in the officers' school, he also took part in the battles with the Bolsheviks in the Volga and Siberia. In February 1920 he returned to Czechoslovakia, where he was assigned to the Main Staff of the Czechoslovak Armed Forces and promoted to captain of infantry.

In 1921 he was called to the War School in Prague, from which he graduated in 1922 and remained as an assistant professor. In June 1923 he was sent to the War College in Paris with the rank of Staff Captain of the General Staff. On his return he held the post of professor of general tactics at the War College in Prague, and in April 1928 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel of the general staff. As part of the personnel changes at the Main Staff after the so-called Falout spy affair, he then became head of the Operations Group of the 3rd Department of the Main Staff in September 1929.

In the summer of 1930 he served a short tour of duty with Infantry Regiment 11 in Písek and in October 1931 he was appointed head of the 3rd Department of the Main Staff. Under his leadership, the work of the Operations Department improved considerably. Bohuslav Fiala supplemented it with experienced officers from the War School and together with them prepared a proposal for a major reorganization and modernization of the Czechoslovak army. From 1932 to 1933 he commanded Infantry Regiment 38 in Beroun, while at the same time he graduated with excellent grades from the Senior Commanders' Course in Prague.

In December 1933, as part of the personnel changes following the arrival of the new Chief of the Main Staff, General Ludvík Krejčí, he returned to the post of Chief of the 3rd Department of the Main Staff. In July 1934 he was promoted to Brigadier General, in October 1935 he was appointed 1st Deputy Chief of the Main Staff and in December 1937 he was appointed Deputy Chief of the Main Staff. He proved to be an excellent and tireless organizer who prepared defence plans for the impending war, and was one of the closest associates of the Chief of the Main Staff, General Ludvík Krejčí. As part of his duties, he was in contact with representatives of the armies of the Small Agreement, the Soviet Union and France. After the announcement of mobilization in September 1938, he became Chief of Staff of the Main Headquarters of the mobilized army. After demobilization, he returned to the post of Vice-Chief of the Main Staff, and from 1 March 1939 he was acting Chief of the Main Staff, who had to leave his post under German pressure. In March 1939 he twice warned the government of the impending German occupation, and on the morning of 15 March 1939 he ordered the destruction of all important files of the Main Staff.

After the occupation of the Czech lands, he was given the task of liaising with the occupying power on military matters. He joined the military resistance, but in December 1939 he was arrested by the German security authorities in connection with a group of so-called press confidants. He was imprisoned for a long time, and finally released in March 1942 for lack of evidence. After recovering, he continued in the resistance and in May 1945 he actively participated in the Prague Uprising.

After the liberation, Bohuslav Fiala briefly served as the first sub-chief of the Main Staff of the new Czechoslovak armed forces, but his promotion was rejected and he was sent on leave in October 1945. He was retired in June 1946 and lived in Prague. Notwithstanding his adverse health, he was deprived of almost his entire pension in 1953, so that he had to take up employment. He worked in an elevator factory, first as an accountant and later as a night porter. He died after a serious illness on 16 September 1964 in Prague.
