Purkrabstvím rozumíme samostatnou budovu převážně se nalézají na velkých královský hradech. Tato budova sloužila jako sídlo správce hradu - tedy purkrabího. Od druhé poloviny 15. století bývá pak tento správce zván hejtmanem a z purkrabství se tak vlastně stává hejtmanství. Purkrabství se řadí mezi stavby palácové.
