In June 1925, even before the delivery of the first Boeing PW-9 ordered a year before, the USAAS decided to modify the 30. , THE PW-9 (25-324) for high-altitude tests of the new supercharged engine the Packard 1A-1530. This redevelopment was considered so essential that the machine got a new designation in the new scheme, the XP-4. XP-4 got a new profile of the wing, instead of Götingen 436 Boeing 103A, and due to the increased weight and lower wings of the same span as the upper. Also changed the armament, under the lower wing outside the propeller were placed two machine guns (the springs don't match, if she retained the original armament of two synchronized machine guns in front of cockpit). XP-4 was 27. July 1926 transported to Wright Field, but in tests not not impressed with, despite the stronger engine, the machine was too heavy and his performances have been due to the fact even worse than the standard , THE PW-9. XP-4 was, therefore, after just 4,5 flight hours stored and 1. march 1928 written off..
