The last 25 machines (32-077/101), ordered in March 1931 under 135 P-12E, were completed in the P-12F version, factory designation Model 251. The first fifteen machines differed from the previous version only by engine, in this case a Pratt & Whitney R-1340-19 with a takeoff power of 447 kW / 600 hp and an altitude of 373 kW / 500 hp at 3,350 m, instead of 2,130 m as in the previous -17 engine. Visually, the P-2Fs were distinguishable by the clustered exhausts, pointing just above the lower wing. The remaining ten machines also had tail wheels instead of spurs, but this distinction was short-lived as the spurs were replaced on the other P-12Fs and P-12Es. The machines were delivered between 6 March and 17 May 1932. The P-12Fs were used by the 36th Fighter Squadron at Langley Field, which received, for example, the 32-080, and by the 24th Squadron, based in the Panama Canal Zone. 32-101, the last P-12F (and the last P-12 ever produced) was experimentally fitted with a covered cabin with a glass back piece by Boeing, and a similar cabin with a simplified frame was later given to a second built machine.
