Grand Admiral John Cronyn Tovey
(7. 3. 1885 - 12. 1. 1971)

John Cronyn Tovey was born on 7 March 1885 in Rochester, County Kent. Tovey joined the Royal Navy at the age of 14. At the start of the First World War, he served on the cruiser Amphion and later commanded the destroyer HMS Onslow, during the Battle of Jutland, for which he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO).

In the inter-war period he held a number of posts until in 1932, already a captain , he took command of the battleship HMS Rodney. During his command of HMS Rodney, Tovey was promoted to the rank of Commodore, and on 27 August 1935 he received the rank of Rear Admiral and served as flag officer in the Mediterranean.

In May 1939 Tovey was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral and became second in command of the Mediterranean Fleet after the declaration of war on Italy in 1940.

In November 1940 he was appointed Commander of the Home Fleet (Home Fleet) with the rank of Admiral and served in that capacity until 1942. During this period he had several clashes with First Sea Lord Dudley Pound and Winston Churchill. His most notable achievement as Commander of the Home Fleet was the sinking of the German battleship Bismarck.
The sinking of the Bismarck was followed by further disputes with Dudley Pound in defending the actions of the battleship captain HMS Prince of Wales, John Leach, and Admiral Frederic Wake-Walker, commanding the HMS Suffolk and HMS Norfolk.

In June 1943, Tovey was appointed Chief of Nore Command , the former supreme command of the British Royal Navy which had operated for several hundred years. It was abolished in the early 1960s (finally on 31 March 1961) and the name refers to the above-mentioned anchorage. The officer at the head of this command (he was always an Admiral) was the most important commander in the defence of the British Isles. It was therefore a prestigious appointment. In October 1943, Tovey was promoted to the rank of Grand Admiral.

Tovey retired from active service in 1946, the same year he received the peerage of Baron, at first surprised by this act and then the problem of which title to choose arose. "Of Scapa" was already taken and "Of the Atlantic" sounded too grandiose. In the end he decided on the Dorset village where he had spent his schooldays - Langton Matravers. So he became the first Baron Tovey, of Langton Matravers.
John Cronyn Tovey died on 12 January 1971 in Madeira.
