Cañón Autopropulsado De 75/40 "Verdeja"
At the turn of the 40s and 50s. In the late 1950s and early 1950s, efforts were made by Spanish designers to develop a self-propelled gun (howitzer). One project was the creation of a self-propelled gun based on the platform of the Spanish Verdeja 1 light tank. The weapon carried was a 75 mm howitzer created by Sociedad Española de Construcción Naval. The turret and part of the hull disappeared from the original platform. An open superstructure was created at the rear of the machine, in which the aforementioned howitzer was lafeted with a beam between 0.5° and 25° and a beam of 4.5° on each side. The standby ammunition supply consisted of 8 rounds of ammunition, and a further 24 rounds could be towed by the self-propelled gun in an ammunition carriage that used the axle and wheels from a German anti-tank cannon of PaK 35/36 37 mm calibre. An interesting feature was a mechanical brake that locked the tension wheel, making the gun more stable and making firing gentler on the chassis components.
Work on the project began in 1945, but due to a lack of necessary components, production of the prototype was delayed. The finished vehicle suffered the same fate as the Verdeja 2 tank. The machine remained at Carabanchel until 1973 and was subsequently sent to Alfonso XIII military base, where the Wad Rass no.55 mechanized infantry regiment was operating. However, it was soon transferred to El Goloso base near Mardida, where it is still an exhibit in the military museum.
