When the U.S. Navy began considering the use of new high-performance air-cooled engines, it sent the first F6C-1 (A3938) back to Buffalo to incorporate a Navy-supplied Pratt & Whitney Wasp engine. Flight trials, of the machine, renamed F6C-4, began in August 1926, and upon their successful completion an order was placed for thirty-one production machines (later assigned the factory designation Model 34H), the first of which was delivered the following March. This machine was given a new chassis with more thorough suspension, and unlike subsequent machines, had a large propeller cone like the prototype. It was later used as the XF6C-4 for testing and eventually served briefly with the Marine Corps VF-4M squadron.

Most F6C-4s were assigned to the Marine Corps, VF-1M, VF-9M and VF-10M squadrons. Eight machines also served alongside eight F2B-1 on VF-2B on USS Langley, including several machines temporarily on floats. In 1930, these machines were moved to VF-10M in San Diego, where they lasted two more years. By 1930, some Marine Corps machines also received Townend-type engine ring covers, which helped increase speed slightly but limited the pilot's vision. The last F6C-4 (A7398) was grounded in April 1933 with 855 flying hours.

A number of machines were used to test other engines. The prototype A3938 was still fitted with the Pratt & Whitney Hornet engine of 391 kW in 1927, and later with the undercarriage of the production F6C-4. Due to the increase in take-off weight to 1,549 kg, the top speed rose to only 256.7 km/h (256.7 mph), and the range rose to 6,675 m (6,675 ft). In this form, as the XF6C-5, it briefly served with VF-9M in late 1927. The A7403 was loaned to Wright Aeronautical Corp. in 1929 and used to test the R-975 Whirlwind engine. This machine retained its original designation. Later in 1929 A7403 also received Macchi floats and was deployed in the Curtiss Sea Cup race in May. It also remained at Anacostia and continued to operate with wheeled chassis.

The same machine received a new engine three years later at the Naval Aircraft Factory, an inverted air-cooled Ranger SGV-770 rated at 261 km/h. The Ranger company tried to get the most power out of the engine by using higher RPMs, and because of the efficiency of the propeller, it was geared at a ratio of 1.32:1. This time the new designation was given, it was renamed XF6C-7, but since it was primarily intended for engine testing, its performance was not recorded (only its speed - 252.7 km/h), nor was the marking on its tail painted over. The engine was not redesigned into a usable form until five years later, and even then it was used only briefly. The XF6C-7 was reverted back to the F6C-4 standard after completing engine tests and briefly returned to normal service.
