Only nine P-6(29-260/268) were completed as originally intended, with the new radiators using ethylene glycol (trade name Prestone) as the coolant. The bow fairing remained the same, although the new radiator was much smaller. Although they originally retained the same designation, the Army renamed them P-6A upon acceptance to distinguish them from the P-6s with conventional radiators adopted in the interim. The P-6As were used for operational tests with the 1st Fighter Group,during which several minor modifications were made to the radiator and some machines received a three-bladed propeller. In April 1931, the first of the P-6As was temporarily converted to the XP-6D prototype, and in 1932 three others were converted to the P-6D.
