On October 3, 1928, three machines were ordered together with P-6, which were to be designated P-11 and Curtiss H-1640-1 Chieftain engines. However, this twelve-cylinder with H cylinders and an output of 447 kW had huge cooling problems, and the construction of the P-11 was therefore canceled before their completion. Two of them, 29-367 and 29-368, were instead completed as P-6s, and the third, 29-374, in October 1930 received a Wright Cyclone star engine. Due to USAAC's strange labeling habits, the machine's designation was changed to YP-20. Later, the YP-20 received large chassis wheel covers and a front cover on the engine. The rudder was also modified, the keel area was increased by half a rib, so that the balance area of the rudder decreased. After completing the tests, the Cyclone on the YP-20 was to be replaced by Conqueror and used to test other modifications such as XP-22, due to the acceleration to it, however, another machine was used, the serial P-6A.

In June 1931, the YP-20 participated in flight tests against the standard P-6 , Boeing P-12 a XP-22. The YP-20 did not do well, on the contrary, a series was ordered according to XP-22. While the XP-22 was rebuilt back to the P-6A, the YP-20 became a true prototype of the newly ordered machines after the engine was replaced and the chassis replaced with those removed from the XP-22. However, he received a modified fairing and the lower part of the fuselage was also reworked, which now did not extend under the wing. In this form, the XP-20 was renamed to XP-6E (because the designation serial machines has meanwhile been changed from Y1P-22 to P-6E). Even this form was not final for 29-374, and was later rebuilt to XP-6F .
