In April 1929 he was the navy handed over to the second prototype Helldiveru, designated XF8C-4. From the previous XF8C-2 from the outside differ mainly by replacing the spur wheel with olejopneumatickým suspension. Soon after he was followed by twenty-five serial machines, which in the course of the year 1930 have entered into service with the fighter squadrons VF-1B on the carrier the USS Saratoga. Flight characteristics and durable construction originally pilots excited enough to overlook the shortcomings of the construction, but soon to take effect. The main problem was the significant decline in performance between the prototypes and fully equipped with serial machines, which have failed to keep up with your jednomístnými counterparts and years in a mixed formation, which required the tactics to them one-man machines have had to adapt. Problems amounted also to an overheating engines, lack of range and cover the tail surfaces, which are in a dive plucked. Other machines, meanwhile, ordered as a modified F8C-5, have been completed without landing hooks and allocated to the marine corps. The reputation of the VF-1B but not yet reached Hollywood, and the squadron and its Helldivery she starred in the movie, aptly called Hell Divers, whose main star was Clark Gable..
