The first production run of the Leopard 2 was 380 machines for the German Bundeswehr , of which 209 were delivered by Krauss-Maffei (chassis nos. 10001-10210) and MaK (p.nos. 20001-20172) delivered 171. The first six Leopard 2s were delivered in 1979 to Kampftruppenschule 2 in Münster. Another 320 machines were destined for I. Corps and its 31st,32nd,34th Tank Battalions of the 1st Panzer Division, where they replaced the obsolete M48A2G. At the same time, the 81st,83rd and 84th Tank Battalions of the 3rd Panzer Division were being rearmed with these new machines. Its original Leopard 1 tanks were transferred to the Grenadier Division's tank battalions, where they replaced the M48A22G. Due to the fact that the EMES 15 IR sights were not yet available during production, they replaced them with the PZB 200 sight, which worked on the principle of using residual light. However, all the machines were ready to be upgraded to the EMES 15 / FLT-2 fire control system.
The Leopard 2A0 designation was introduced after the fact to distinguish this production variant. After the upgrade, this variant was rebranded to Leopard 2A2.
