The Vickers Type 253, based on previous Vickers types and designed by Barnes Wallis, was originally designed for the Ministry of Aviation's G.4/31 specifications, which required a bomber biplane. as a private initiative he has already succeeded in the selection.
Perhaps the biggest benefit was the new, geodetic design of the fuselage, allowing greater resistance to weight reduction (previously used by Wallis on the R100 airship). Also for this reason, however, the bombs carried were placed in brackets under the wings, so that the integrity of the fuselage structure is not disturbed by the bomb bay. The Mk I version had two separate cockpits, for the pilot and navigator/bomber, the Mk II version was replaced by a combined cockpit.
In September 1935, 96 machines were ordered and the first serial machines took off in January 1937. Three months later, the Squadron was re-equipped with these machines No 7 and then until the end of the year squadrons 76, 35, 77, 148 a 207 . Due to their low self-defense ability, Wellesley was gradually moved to the Middle East from May 1939, where they took part in the fighting in the East African campaign. They were discarded at the end of 1942.
On November 5, 1938, two specially modified aircraft, belonging to the Long-Range Development Flight, successfully made a record non-stop flight from Ismailia, Egypt to Darwin, Australia. The flight on the 11,494 km long route took over 48 hours. The third machine flew "only" to Koepang on the island of Timor.
