Lieutenant General Ernst Hammer



He was born on October 20, 1894 in Falkenau a.d. Eger in the Czech Republic as one of the three children of a railway official. After engineering school, in 1903 he became Fähnrich R-U of artillery. 1907 promoted to lieutenant, 1912 to lieutenant. During World War II, he served in heavy artillery in the Balkans and the Italian Front. 1915 promoted to captain, 1916 service at the Ministry of War, 1918 commander of the battery on the Western Front, in addition to seven Austrian decorations awarded the German Iron Crosses of both degrees and the Turkish Crescent Order. 1920 in the Austrian army promoted to major and commander of the artillery division, 1922 staff officer of the 1st Brigade, 1924 promoted to lieutenant colonel. After serving in the Ministry of Military 1928 he served in the staff of the Artillery Regiment 2, 1930 Colonel, 1935 Major General in the General Staff of the Army. Taken over to the Wehrmacht, at the outbreak of World War II he commanded the 75th Infantry Division. He did not get into combat in Poland or France, until after being promoted to lieutenant general (November 1, 1940) he could prove on the Eastern Front that he could command his soldiers. For his services in the siege battles of Kiev and Belgrade, he received the Knight's Cross on December 20, 1941. During the advance to Voronezh, he twice became seriously ill with dysentery and, due to his poor health from 10.1942, declared himself incapable of frontline deployment. 1943/44 commanded Division No. 190 (composed of reserve, training and school battalions) in the Netherlands, until 09.1944 transferred to the front and in Volume XII. SS Corps deployed against Birt-Polish paratroopers in the Netherlands. In 11.1944 the division reorganized into an infantry, then deployed at the Reichswald, and Venlo, most recently in the Ruhr. In 04.1945 Hammer led his men into American captivity, from which he was released in 1947. By a double father, he died on December 5, 1957 in Vienna.
