Captain Rudolf Heger





He was born on June 1, 1917 in Wolframitz in Moravia as the son of a gendarme district inspector. 1936 Feldwebel in the Austrian army, last in the rank of Kadett-Koporal. As a non-commissioned officer, the waiter was transferred to the Wehrmacht. He underwent a Polish campaign with the 96th Artillery Regiment of the 44th Infantry Division, then sent to an officer's course. April 1, 1940 appointed lieutenant. The first day of the eastern campaign awarded the Iron Cross II. class, successful as a battery officer. 10.1941 awarded the General Badge for attack, 11.1941 Iron Cross I. class. 1942 Lieutenant and commander of the 5th Battery, from 08.1942 deployment before Stalingrad as commander of the 4th Battery. On November 22, 1942, a few days after the start of the Soviet siege attack near Kusinovka, he repulsed the attack of three regiments, after five hours of firing, only two cannons remained firable, and Heger himself was severely wounded by a fragment of a hand grenade. Until 03.1943 he was treated in Vienna. Here, on January 21, 1943, he learned about the awarding of the Knight's Cross. The 44th Infantry Division was destroyed near Stalingrad. 01.04.1943 was in the rank of captain commander 5./Art.Rgt. 96 in the newly created 44th Infantry Division, soon became commander of II. section. 01.1944 deployed on the Italian front. On January 31, 1944, he fell near Monte Cassino when he drove with two other officers along the road to Terella in an Allied artillery raid. Heger's older brother Otto was also awarded the Knight's Cross 09.1944 in the infantry.
