HMS Barham belonged to the famous series of Queen Elizabeth class ships, her keel was laid on 24.02.1913 at the shipyard "John Braun and Co.", she was launched on 31.12.1914. On 19.08.1915 her construction was completed and the ship was handed over for trials, which lasted until the end of September. The following day, 1.10.1915, Rear-Admiral Hugh Evan-Thomas, Commander of the 5th Battle Squadron, hoisted his flag on her deck to signify that she would be his new flagship.
The ship took an active part in both world wars. HMS Barham's involvement in World War II began more than unhappily. She accidentally rammed the destroyer HMS Duchess on 12 December 1939, which subsequently sank. 124 sailors of the crew of the ill-fated destroyer perished. Just two weeks later (28.12.1939) HMS Barham was torpedoed by a German U-boat U-30 and suffered damage that put her out of commission for 3 months. After repairs and deployment, she was hit by three torpedoes from the German submarine U-331 under the command of Lieutenant Hans-Dietrich von Tiesenhausen in the Mediterranean Sea on 25 November 1941. After an ammunition depot exploded, the ship sank very quickly, killing more than 2/3 of the crew. Of the crew of 1,184 officers and sailors, 841 perished. Those who survived were rescued by other ships.
