Before the US entered the war, the Thomas Brothers Factory was the third largest American company and supplied the military with training aircraft during the war. In 1918, Thomas-Morse, like many others, attempted to build a two-seater fighter. The military ordered two machines, one of which was designed for static tests, for its time a radical concept of a high-altitude aircraft with struts covered with canvas and providing additional lift. The fuselage was very short in an effort to achieve the best possible dexterity and the engine was basically completely tucked under the wing. For relief, most of the structure was wooden, with only a minimum of metal parts, and even with relief cutouts. In July 1918, it was handed over to the US Army Air Force, but during transport to the airport, where the machine was towed behind a truck, the chassis was damaged. After the repair, driving tests took place on the frozen Cayuga Lake, where the first takeoff also took place, but the landing gear was damaged again during takeoff. The MB-1 then took off once more and then was canceled due to a too weak construction.
