At the end of 1919, the chief designer of the Thomas-Morse B. D. Thomas company began work on two designs of high-altitude planes, which were first designed for this company as all-metal. Both had wings with a duralumin frame covered with corrugated iron, and the fuselage was the same sheet metal formed around metal rings. The first of these was completed, the second of them, MB-10, a two-seater training aircraft with a rotary 75kW engine Le Rhône, which first took off in late 1921, but had very poor flight characteristics. The second, the fighter MB-9, did not have a front pilot space and instead of a rotary engine was given a much more powerful in-line Wright H-3, whose radiator and oil tank was located in a cylindrical body suspended between the landing gear legs. Performance and control improved, but the prototype was still plagued by cooling problems, poor cockpit layout, weak chassis and engine vibration. The first flight in early 1922 was followed by a short test period, after which both machines were permanently placed in storage.
