In 1914, Benjamin Douglas Thomas, who later became the firm's head designer, joined Thomas Brothers, having previously worked at Curtiss and, before that, Vickers and Sopwithe in his native England. However, despite sharing the same surname and country of origin, he was not related to the Thomas brothers. His first design in his new position was the T-2, which was based on Thomas's previous work, the Curtiss Model J. Work began while the company was still at its original headquarters in Bath, and the first flight of the prototype took place soon after the move to Ithaca, which was completed on 7 December 1914. The T-2 had a 67 kW Austro-Daimler engine and twin-truss wings and was one of the most powerful aircraft of its time. It was therefore of interest to the British Purchasing Board, which in 1915 ordered two series of twelve machines (3809-3820, 8269-8280) for service with the RNAS. The next order did not come, probably due to the lack of OX-5 engines fitted to the production machines. Later, B. D. Thomas for the US Navy SH-4, which had essentially the same fuselage but a float landing gear with a central float and two auxiliary floats, longer triple-truss wings and a larger keel area. In 1916, the Navy ordered 15 of these machines (A-134/136, 395/406), which were delivered probably in early 1917 and are sometimes referred to by their new corporate name as Thomas-Morse SH-4.
