Duchy of Bohemia - a state formation in the Bohemian basin, whose origins date back to the 9th century. The country was ruled by princes of the Přemyslid family, and under their leadership (and because of the threat from the rising Polish state) the principality became one of the countries forming the Holy Roman Empire. In 1085, Prince Vratislaus II received his personal royal title from Emperor Henry IV (officially crowned June 15, 1085). The coronation took place on 15.06.1085 in St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague. As it was not a hereditary title, his successors were again titled as princes after his death on 14.01.1092.

Another royal title was given to King Vratislav's grandson Vladislav II, who was crowned king on 11.01.1158. Again, this was a personal and not a hereditary title, and the conversion of the principality into a kingdom did not occur until 1198 during the reign of Přemysl Otakar I.
