He was born on 17.7.1919 in Triebendorf in Moravia as the son of a master cutler, he had six siblings. He made his living as a goldsmith before he was called up for military service in January 1939. He served in Polish, Western and Eastern field campaigns from squad leader to company commander in III./Gren.Rgt. 89 in the ranks of the 12th Infantry Division. 05. 1942 in the ranks of the anti-tank platoon awarded the Iron Cross I. Class, along with a badge for destroying a tank, wounded in close combat. 8.1942 named in the honor roll of the army, promoted to the rank of Feldwebel, and took command of the platoon in the 14th company. In the summer of 1944 on the invasion front in numerous anti-tank engagements - meanwhile decorated for the fourth time for destroying a tank and a silver buckle for wounds. After the retreat from France, participation in the defensive battle of Aachen followed. With his anti-tank platoon unsupported, he held the village of Stolberg - partly in close combat, 8 US Shermans were destroyed, with Knirsch suffering a wound. For this battle he received the Knight's Cross and leave for bravery on 21.12.1944. In May 1945 he fell into American captivity, after his release he became seriously ill, and died in his hometown on 14.4.1946.
