EXOCET SM39

Propellant cruise missile with a flat flight path adapted for use from submarines. Development began in 1979 based on an air-launched version of the Exocet AM39 missile; it was inducted into the arsenal in 1984. For submarine use, the missile had to be modified to improve the method of launching from below the surface. For this purpose, a containerised VSM (Vehicle Sous-Marin) launcher module was developed, in which the missile is housed and by means of which it is launched from the torpedo launcher (533 mm/21 in) of the submarine. The SM39 missile leaves the VSM module at low altitude above the surface and, using an inertial navigation system, continues to fly at low altitude above the surface to a specified target. In the final phase of the flight, it performs a search and target acquisition using an active radar warhead. The warhead has a shatter-rupture effect, contains pre-formed fragments to increase the damage inflicted, and is activated by either an impact fuze (direct hit on the target) or a non-contact fuze.
