Infantry General Friedrich Materna




Born 21.6.1885 Dvorce (Hof) district Bruntál in Moravia as the son of a school director. He was educated at the infantry cadet school, 1904 Fähnrich in R-U Inf.Rgt. 97, 1905 Lt. At the rank of lieutenant sent to the General Staff School. 1914 at the rank of captain commanded a company on the Eastern Front, later commanded a battalion in the 4th Infantry Brigade.1916 Staff service, last in the rank of major on the Italian front, among other Austrian decorations, he was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class (1914). Steep career in the Austrian Federal Army, 1921 lieutenant colonel, 1926 commander of the 2nd Brigade. 1929 colonel, 1934 inspector of troops. 1936 as major general he took over responsibility for training at the Ministry of Defence. 1938 commander of the 3rd Division. 1939 Commander of the 45th Infantry Division. During the western campaign, he scored great successes in the attack at the Aisne River. 5.8.1940 decorated with the Knight's Cross. 20.10.1940 promoted to General of Infantry , commanded the XXth Army Corps. 1941/42 in Russia endured winter defensive fighting, in September 1942 was transferred to the command reserve due to old age. 15.12.1942 German Cross in gold. From 1943 he commanded the Wehrkreis Salzburg, in September 1944 he was released to the reserve due to old age. Materna died 11.11.1946 in Vienna
