Major-General Cecil Bisshopp, C.B.


Entered service 10.12.1799 as a Cornet in the 14th Light Dragoons, promoted to Lieutenant 14.10.1800. Promoted to Captain 23.6.1808 and transferred to the 14th ( Buckinghamshire ) Regiment of Foot. He took part in the Spanish campaign of 1808-09, including the Battle of Corunna, where he was Lieutenant-General Gwynne's aide-de-camp. He also took part in the Walcheren Expedition and served in the South of France in 1814. After serving in Malta he was sent to India in 1818, where he was promoted to Brevet Major on 27 May 1825. For the capture of Bhurtpoor, where he commanded the left column of the assault, he was cited, decorated C.B. and promoted to Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel. On 11.11.1851 he was promoted Major-General, and from 16.5.1857 until his death commanded as Colonel 16th Foot.
