The badge was designed by Lieutenant Adolf Bucholtz and was approved as the regimental emblem by the regimental officers' corps in 1921.

The badges were made of silver or tombak by the jeweller Zeman Liwszyc in Vilnius. In 1927, a silver enamel badge cost 28 zlotys.

It was awarded to all officers, non-commissioned officers and privates (hulans) who had served in the regiment for at least one year. The right to the award was confirmed by a three-member committee selected at a meeting of the regimental officers' corps.

On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the regiment's foundation in 1929, the badge was also awarded to five Finnish officers.
