Admin: This downed B-17 "Judy D" should be on the conscience of most likely Fw. Martin Brendel from 1./JG 2, a time of 8:30 and or himself the commander of the 12./JG 2 Oblt. Georg-Peter Eder, a time of 8:32. Both claimed usaaf B-17 just in the vicinity of Dieppe.
As soon as I find out something new, I'll let you know .)

I present here another lost bomber 100 BG which is known the exact opponent:

B-17 s/n 42-31215, 100 BG, 349 BS downed the Fw 190, which, piloted by Ofw. Adolf Glunz, for whom this marked a 47 kill, 5./JG 26, near Beauvais, clock 11:03.

I'd like the names of all the crew members of this bomber, shot down Glunzem .) Thanks in advance.

Well, I was looking for the lost machine 42-31215 and it will be a nut, because the sources are dispersing - one machine with this serial number demonstrably crashed in Nevada on January 4, 1944 when it caught fire in the air. Two men of the crew died, the others escaped by parachute. Record of the loss of the machine with this serial number from the raid on Bremen and Paris November 26, 1943 also exists, but I could not find anything more, nor the name of the machine, the designation, the crew, just nothing. Maybe if anyone has anything more, let me know!
Well, I was looking for the lost machine 42-31215 and it will be a nut, the sources are dispersing - one machine with this serial number demonstrably crashed in Nevada 4.1.1944 when it caught fire in the air. Two men of the crew died, the others escaped by parachute. Record of the loss of the machine with this serial number from the raid on Bremen and Paris November 26, 1943 also exists, but I could not find anything more, nor the name of the machine, the designation, the crew, just nothing. Maybe if you have anything more, let me know!
I watched the flight February 10, 1944. The defense of this area was JG3, which at the same time reports several victories at the same time:

4/JG3 Lf. Franz Ruhl
6/JG3 Fw. Johannes Hoyer
5/JG3 Uffz. Johann Fröhlich

Thanks to the discovery of overalls, personal belongings and T/Sgt Kluttz documents hidden at the school in Kovářská on March 19, 1982, the fate of this aircraft became very well known and well documented. The finding also contributed to the interest and search for the fate of the machines shot down on September 11, 1944 in the so-called air battle over the Ore Mountains, in one of the largest air battles over our territory.
The machine was hit during the first attack of fighters from JG 4 over the Czech border. It flew all the way over the village of Kovářská, where it exploded in the air. The wreckage of the machine fell into the village. Only 1st Lt Bradshaw managed to jump out. Then the plane exploded in the air. Survivors of the crew located in the back of the machine, which landed on the roof of the school, also survived. Among them is S/Sgt Kluttz. Other crew members were killed. S/Sgt Stone probably died as a result of a fall when he fell out of a broken machine and his parachute did not open completely.
If you are interested in the details of this case and others from September 11, 1944, I can only recommend the publication Black Monday over the Ore Mountains (author Jan Zdiarský) published by Museum of the Air Battle over the Ore Mountains on September 11. 1944 in Kovářská, or a visit to this museum.

The machine collided with fighters from JG 4 . They were hit after ten minutes. The badly damaged plane went to an emergency landing. However, this failed, only one crew member, S / Sgt Everhart, survived the impact. He was probably thrown from the plane on impact. He woke up after some impact after the impact, in the captivity of German soldiers and from a greater distance he could observe a burning plane. He was then taken to a hospital in Nuenstein, where he spent 12 weeks, and was then transferred to a prison camp, where he learned that the other crew members had not survived the landing. The machine crashed near Kretscham.

The machine was hit in the bomb bay and was forced to drop its load fifteen minutes before reaching the target. The bombs fell on a wooded landscape. The machine held with the formation above Verona. But the omitting engines did not allow him to continue. The crew left the plane around 13:00, near Ghedi in Italy. They all left the plane in good condition and were captured by German and Italian troops. Several of them were later escaped.

The aircraft lost the GTC, engine number 2 and the left wing were on fire. Smoke was spreading in the fuselage, the steering was blocked and the internal communication was not working. It is possible that the machine was hit by a rocket. The rear gunner S/Sgt Compton probably died in one of the fighter attacks. His body was found in ruins, still in place. Col. Kennedy was an weapons expert who flew with the crew as an observer at the side gunner, where he replaced S/Sgt Gineikis. The machine was attacked during the flight of the coast by fighters and later over the target. Although the No. 4 engine was on fire, the machine held position in formation and dropped bombs on the target. He broke away from the formation until he reached the Alps near Munich. Engine number 2 also failed there. The machine left the formation. At that time he was seen Ju-88, who tried to catch up with the machine, nothing else is known about him. The pilot B-17 tried to reach Sicily. Finally, after stopping the third engine, the pilot had to make an emergency landing at sea. The landing was absolutely exemplary and the machine remained on the surface for another hour and a half, which gave the crew plenty of time to leave the aircraft and launch two five-seater dinghi with radio and supplies. Eventually, the entire crew was captured by the Germans.

The machine was shot down by a fighter. Six crew members died on the plane. The others managed to jump out. The so-called "Gear down legend" is connected to this victory. The fighter allegedly attacked them even after the machine pulled out the landing gear and prepared to land (which is taken as a sign of surrender). In addition, it is said that the German fighters at that time had fallen on the aircraft with a "D" in a square on the GTC (ie with the call sign 100th BG). But all this is unconfirmed and probably belongs to the realm of legends and myths of World War II. The rest of the crew jumped over Schmalgraf and the machine landed half a kilometer further.

A heavy attack by fighters resulted in an uncontrollable fire to the No. 1 engine and stern section. The crew was forced to leave the machine near Tauberschofsheim, a suburb of Wurzburg. It was about 200km before the finish. The shooter/radio operator T/Sgt Bair was wounded at the beginning of the attack, but he remained with the machine gun and was later killed just before the crew left the plane. His body was later identified by S/Sgt Grissom in a wreck, to which the Germans took him for identification. Some members also suffered injuries. They were all captured after the jump.

Before reaching the target, the machine was attacked by fighters. The 20mm projectile exploded in the nacelle of the No. 3 engine, broke the throttle control and oil began to flow out of the engine. Then the pilot was warned by the shooter from the lower tower that they were also losing oil at the No. 2 engine. The pilot landed on the nearest field. It was near Duebendorf in Switzerland. He landed on his stomach without pulling out the landing gear. After landing, the crew did not have time to destroy the aircraft and it was confiscated by Swiss soldiers. The crew was interned. Most likely, this is the first American bomber to land in Switzerland.

The crew that flew this plane on a fateful day was called the "Wolff Pack", after its commander Robert Wolff. Only T/Sgt Simon was a replacement for this crew member, S/Sgt Brady, who was suffering from pneumonia at the time. Their machine had been used by another crew the day before and had received several hits. It was repaired all night. During the mission itself, the machine was attacked before reaching the target, near La Rochelle, fighters Me-109 and flak. Engine No. 3 was hit. The crew tried to stick with the formation. Subsequently, however, the engine No. 2 was disabled. and the stern section was also affected. At that moment, it was no longer possible to stay in formation. The machine tore off and began to sink. At that moment, they were also watched by Me-109. One was shot down and the other discouraged from further attacks. Eventually, the pilot was forced to make an emergency landing at sea. The landing was successful and the machine remained afloat long enough for the crew to leave safely. They were taken on board by a French fishing boat, but they were forced by a German patrol boat to land in a port on a nearby island, where German soldiers took the crew captive.

Personally, I think that one of the mentioned German fighters was Hans Weik, at that time at 4./JGr Ost and this he was the first to shoot down the four-engine bomber he shot down.

Vypadl jeden z motorů, kompas a elektrický systém . Posádka vypustila náklad, opustila formaci a zamířili zpět.

Během následující cesty k cíli několikrát vypadly a byly znovu nahozeny motory č.3 a č.4.

At 14:52 near the coast of Denmark 2nd Lt. Smih reported via VHF that he would attempt to reach Sweden. The machine had previously been hit by anti-aircraft fire over the target and was subsequently attacked by Fw-190. The machine was hit by missiles and emitted heavy smoke. The crew abandoned the aircraft and the machine's crash was recorded by the German radar station at Skovby. Several crew members were captured just after landing, others hid in the woods near Fjellerup and were found by farmer Rasmus Thran, who hid them for a time. However, they sought to escape to Sweden and tried to reach the sea. However, they were captured on the coast at Baring. Only Ira Evans managed to hide in the forest and join the Danish resistance. He reached Sweden on 7 March 1944. The machine crashed in Harslev, 7 km from Bogense in the northwestern part of the Danish Funen Island (Fateful Island ?).

The machine made an emergency landing after the loss of three engines. The plane landed near Spaarndam (about 8km from Amsterdam) in the Netherlands at 14:49. The pilot made an emergency landing at the request of the crew, who preferred an emergency landing before jumping out of the plane. The third engine failed over the North Sea and it was clear that the machine was unable to reach the coast of England. The pilot therefore turned the plane closer to the Dutch shore. And after penetrating the low clouds near Amsterdam, the pilot landed on the nearest larger field. None of the crew was injured. All were captured and held in prison camps, until their liberation by the Allies. The machine was apparently lost not due to enemy attacks, but due to mechanical failures that caused the failure of three engines (however, the possibility of "contribution" flak is not excluded). The machine was used because the usual crew machine was not able to fly at that time. However, the machine that replaced it was in poor technical condition and never completed any mission due to technical defects, this mission was no exception. After an emergency landing, the crew tried to destroy the machine by igniting.

Ostatní vyskočili ještě nad Německem a byli zajati.

The machine together with the aircraft 42-39817 ("MURDERERS ROW") and 42-31970 separated due to clouds from the formation. Then the trio was attacked by fighters Fw-190. After losing one engine and seriously injuring T/Sgt A. Cooper, the pilot decided to reach Sweden. But the crew was wrong, and when they made an emergency landing at the alleged Swedish airport, it turned out to be Schleswig Airport in Germany. The crew was captured and the machine confiscated by the Germans. After repairs, it was moved to the KG 200 in Rechlin and used there probably under the designation A3 + GE. It was later destroyed in the Jagel fighter P-51.

A aby toho nebylo dost další střely zasahují pilota do hlavy. Co-pilot nemá ani čas reagovat na hrůzu odehrávající se těsně vedle něj. Další střely ho doslova rozervou na kusy. Katastrofa pokračuje. Další střely rvou trup. Zásah dostává i spodní střelecká věž.

The machine became entangled in the collision of machines 42-39830 and 42-37913. The wreckage from this encounter significantly damaged the fuselage and probably also the engines. Subsequently, the machine was damaged by anti-aircraft fire. Despite this damage, the pilot managed to stay with the formation and bomb the station in Munich. On the way back, the machine was damaged by additional anti-aircraft fire. The machine began to lose speed and altitude and separated from the formation. The lone aircraft accompanied P-47, which also had to leave due to running out of fuel. Subsequently, the aircraft appeared Me-109 and Fw-190. The pilots signaled that the B-17 pilot land on the approaching snowy field. The B-17 landed and the fighters circled around for a while. Subsequently, Me-109 tried to land, during which, however, his landing gear sank in the snow and the machine ended up with his nose stuck in the field . Fw-190 left the space. From Me-109 climbed uninjured pilot and went to the B-17, whose crew was already threatened by German peasants with pitchforks and pistols (probably militia), then arrived a German Luftwaffe unit that captured the crew. An emergency landing took place at the German airport Dornstadt near Ulm.

During the flight over Berlin, the machine was hit by anti-aircraft fire. Engines No. 3 and No. 4 were hit. The machine began to lose altitude and lag behind the formation. Subsequently, he was attacked by five fighters Fw-190. The machine started to burn and the crew was forced to leave it. S/Sgt Frank V. Kroczynski was probably killed at the beginning of the fighter attack. Lt. Irving Jacobowitz was probably killed by an explosion while leaving the plane (a version is also mentioned that he was killed by German civilians after hitting the ground). Lt. Emil J. Siewert probably died in the explosion of oxygen cylinders. The remaining crew members were captured. Some were seriously injured and subsequently taken to hospital.

The machine was probably attacked and shot down by enemy fighters over the target area. Due to the 10/10 clouds and more losses in this area, it was not possible to determine the exact fate of the aircraft. All crew members were captured.

During this flight, Wisniewski and Graham replaced crew members, Sergeants Sullivan and Marshall. Even before arriving over the target, German fighters shot down six machines from the group in which the aircraft flew during the first attack. In the end, all aircraft from the group (18 machines) were shot down except for three. When the fighters disengaged in the anti-aircraft fire, the crew continued the raid and bombed Berlin. However, when they turned to return, the German fighters struck again. As a result of their attack, the right external engine began to burn. The left inner was also hit and stopped. The machine was on fire and became unmanageable. The pilot gave the order to leave the machine. This took place over German territory and the machine crashed west of Bückwitzer See, three kilometers from the village of Wusterhausen. Lt. Lieutenant Denis and Sgt. According to German records, the Kouns were found dead in the rubble. However, there is a presumption (it seems justified) that this should have obscured the fact that both men were killed by the civilian population before the arrival of the military patrol. The other crew members were captured. This is also discussed in the story of one of them, written by his wife (Barfield).

The machine was named Big Stoop, but the name was never written on the plane.

The crew for this flight was composed of experienced pilots, except for rookie R. Kelly, who came from the states shortly before the mission. He participated in the event as a lead pilot. Copilot H. Alf took part in the mission as a rear gunner. Rear shooter D. Barnhart was designated as a replacement (flexible) shooter. According to testimony, the machine was hit by anti-aircraft fire shortly after the bombs were dropped on the target. One explosion occurred at the cockpit and the other at the tail of the aircraft. The cockpit began to burn. The machine went into a steep fall, the upper turret was detached and when entering the clouds the whole aircraft disintegrated. The five surviving crew members were captured. For bomber M. Cain, records show that he was detained by German soldiers in the streets of Sottevast on May 2.
