In response to Soviet successes during the opening phase of the Belorussian Strategic Offensive against Army Group Center (Operation Bagration), Hitler ordered the construction of small, highly mobile armored battle groups capable of responding quickly and effectively to enemy breakthroughs on 2 July 1944. On 11 July 1944, the OKH Armaments Department and the Replacement Command received orders to form 10 tank brigades numbered 101 to 110.

The formation of Panzer-Brigade 103 began on 26 July 1944 in [url=/topic/view/36802]Military District XII
from veterans of 25. Panzer Division who survived its destruction in northern Ukraine in February 1944, with the remainder of the men being transferred from Panzer Division Norway. The brigade headquarters, with a command platoon and staff company, was formed from members of Tank Grenadier Regiment 146. The core of the brigade became Tank Troop (Panther) 2103. Formed from Tank Detachment Norway, it was supplemented by men from the reserve tank detachments, 3 companies received tanks Pz.Kpfw. V Panther and the fourth (light) company 11 tank fighters Jagdpanzer IV.

The Tank Grenadier Battalion 2103 (armoured) of three companies was formed at Military Training Area Grafenwöhr from what remained of the [i:Kampfgruppe Treuthaupt - a battle group that concentrated survivors from [url=/topic/view/216281]Tank Grenadier Regiment 146 and Tank Grenadier Regiment 147. The tank engineer company at half-staff was made up of personnel from 233rd Tank Reserve Division and Tank Division Norway. In the first half of August 1944, all brigade components were assembled at Training Area Arys in East Prussia.

Before the completion of the consolidation training, orders were given to move the brigade to Latvia. Here, between 17 and 25 August, in the Tukums sector of the city, it covered the flanks of the units that opened supply routes from East Prussia to the besieged Riga during Operation Doppelkopf. Afterwards, the brigade was transferred to the 4th Army reserve to replenish its numbers. In September and October it was then deployed to the defensive fighting for East Prussia. Weakened by the losses suffered, it was withdrawn from East Prussia on 4 November.

In mid-November, the brigade received orders to disband Tank Grenadier Battalion 2103, with most of its personnel being provided to the newly formed 18th Tank Grenadier Division, with the remainder being incorporated into 5th Tank Division.
After Tank (Panther) 2103 handed over the remaining tanks to 3. Tank Army, and in mid-December he was sent to Neuruppin, where, using reinforcements from Tank Replacement Detachment 5, he formed Detachment I of Tank Regiment 39 and served with that regiment from 1 January 1945 until the end of the war.

By mid-November, only a torso of the brigade remained, consisting of the brigade headquarters, a command platoon and a staff and supply company. The brigade moved to Military Training Area Senne and from 26 November acted as the tactical headquarters for the so-called "Senne Brigade". "Alarmeinheiten) stationed in the vicinity of Bad Bergzabern - Volkssturm battalions, engineer battalions and tank fighter battalions, artillery units and anti-aircraft artillery units, including Heavy Tank Fighter Detachment 654 and Heavy Tank Fighter Detachment 93, as well as II. An improvised Kampfgruppe (battle group) composed of the above units repelled an Allied attempt to cross the Rhine between Mannheim and Germersheim in December 1944.

In early January 1945, the brigade was withdrawn to Grafenwöhr Training Area to rest and replenish losses.

On 20 January 1945, the brigade, together with Tank Regiment Coburg, moved by rail to Training Area Neuhammer in Lower Silesia and then on its own to the sector near the town of Sagan (Żagań). From 26 January it was deployed on the Oder bridgehead at Steinau (Ścinawa) and in early February it participated in a counterattack from the Kaltwasser (Stadźeńka) sector against Soviet tank units advancing on Zhořelec.

At the end of February it was transferred to the Lauban (Lubań) sector, where it rallied local troops and used them to defend the town. In early March, it was able to break the encirclement of the city and was subsequently transferred to the Oder front east of Berlin, where the headquarters of Tank Brigade 103 formed the headquarters of the newly formed Tank Division Müncheberg on 8 March 1945.
