Instalace této zbraně do jednomístných stíhacích letadel si vyžadovala provedení úprav draku letounu a motorového lože.
The installation of the NS-37 in single-seat fighters demanded some structural strengthening and redesign of those types. But the problems caused by the large recoil and the great weight of this weapon could never be solved completely. Flight stability during firing of this gun depended on flying speed and length of salvo. The higher the speed and the shorter the salvo, the better was the stability. Normally there were fired no salvos of more than three shots, because longer salvos would inevitably lead to loose of sight and wasting of ammunition.

The NS-37 37 mm calibre cannon

This cannon is a product of the 1942 competition for the 37 mm calibre air cannon. Because the NS-37, designed by A.E. Nudelman and A.S. Suranov, outperformed its competitor, the Spitalny Š-37, in many respects, the gun was accepted into service in October 1942. Within three months, mass production got underway, and from the spring of 1943 the NS-37 gun began to be fitted to production aircraft LaGG-3, Jak-9 T, and also in the Il-2 combat aircraft. This cannon proved very useful in combat. By the end of 1945, over 10,000 units had been produced. The work of the designers of this cannon was recognized as early as 1943, in which they received high state honors.

The design of the NS-37 cannon took into account mainly the reduction of the effects of firing on the aircraft itself. The operation of the gun's automatics was based on the use of a short barrel breech, which succeeded in reducing the overall stress on the gun's breech and the entire aircraft structure. Furthermore, the designers focused on extending the operating time without cleaning and lubrication, as well as on easy and trouble-free supply of the cannon with ammunition.

The serial NS-37 cannon was characterized by very reliable automatic function, relatively low weight and high cadence for the given calibre.

[Example of ammunition used :

37 mm fragmentation-ignited with impact igniter

Weight of cartridge : 1,280 g
Weight of projectile : 735 g
Length of cartridge : ??? mm
Aiming velocity : 900 m/s

Target effects : Provides a penetration in the aircraft covering of up to 1 m2, ignites gasoline in the tanks. When the centroplane is hit, the structure of the attacked aircraft is completely destroyed to the size of fighter jets. Three to four hits are usually sufficient to bring down larger aircraft.

37 mm anti-tank-ignition with tracer

Bullet weight : 1,280 g
Bullet weight : 735 g
Bullet length : ??? mm
Aiming velocity : 900 m/s

Target effects : Pierces 50 mm armor at 200 m at 90°, pierces 30 mm armor at 500 m at 45°, ignites gasoline in tanks. The glowing trail is visible up to a distance of 800 m.
