The history of the "Russian reno" begins on the southern front of the Civil War in 1919, where the Red Army captured a tank Renault FT-17 and decided to send it as a gift to Lenin in Moscow. The gift was received with enthusiasm and "Sovnarkom" decided to produce a copy, it was destined for the "Krasnoye Sormovo" plant. The first meeting of the designers was on 22.8.1919 and it was decided that the first tanks would be delivered within 9 months. In 1920 it was planned to form five units of three tanks each, one gun and two machine guns. The disassembled and incomplete tank did not arrive at the factory until October 1919, even copying was not so easy, several factories were to participate in the production and Krasnoye Sormovo was only the final supplier, the engines were to be from the AMO factory and the armour plates from the Izhora factory, but for them it was not a priority (they had their own tasks) and so the copying was quite protracted. A team of engineers consisting of N. Chrulev, F. Nefedof and V. Kalinin was strongly motivated by the words (and mauser) of Commissioner I. Gaugel. The fact that some of the parts were lost during disassembly and transportation (for example, the gearbox was missing) was also a big problem. But even so, the first tank was completed by 1.9.1920 (I guess Gaugel was quite convincing). Gaugel reported to Moscow that the first tank had already been tested on 31.8. The first machine was named "Freedom Fighter Comrade Lenin" and its photos are quite famous. Originally two versions were to be produced, one with a 37mm Hotchkiss gun and the other with a Hotchkiss machine gun, but later it was decided that all tanks would have a gun and the machine gun would be placed in the right side of the turret (the turret was tight so it was not very convenient). In addition to the 15 Russian "reno" there was also an original booty machine which was rebuilt in the factory.
