On 9 October 1934, the Yugoslav cruiser Dubrovnik landed in Marseille. On board the cruiser arrived the Serbian royal couple. King Alexander I the Unifier, was greeted on behalf of President Albert Lebrun (1871-19) by French statesman and then Foreign Minister Louis Barthou(1862-1934). A few moments later, as the vehicle carrying King Alexander drove through the streets of the city, an assassination organized by Croatian nationalists from the Ustaša organization took place. The victims of the assassination were King Alexander I and Minister Bartha.
On 18 October 1934, the funeral of the King was held in Belgrade with the participation of foreign delegations. On behalf of Germany, there was Hermann Göring, who is considered the main inspirer of the assassination. Marshal Philippe Pétain of France was also present. Honorary troops were sent to the funeral, including an honorary company from Czechoslovakia. It was transported to Belgrade on a military tugboat on the Danube.
The Yugoslav government had a commemorative, mourning medal minted for those attending the king's funeral. The medal is struck from white metal alloy with a diameter of 30 mm and a thickness of 4 mm. The edge of the medal is very slightly raised on both sides. The head of the assassinated King Alexander I is depicted on the obverse side. Around it is the inscription IN MEMORIAM VITEŠKOM KRALJU ALEXANDRU I.UJEDINITELJU (In memory of the knightly King Alexander I. the Unifier).
The ribbon of the medal is pierced, 38 mm wide (see picture). The number of medals awarded did not exceed 900 pieces. We can say that it is not only a beautiful medal, interesting in its meaning and therefore rare. The medal depicted here comes from a private collection.
Note:
Alexander I Karadjordje was born on 16 December 1888 in Cetinje. His mother was Princess Zorka, daughter of Prince Nikola of Montenegro. Alexander became Crown Prince in 1913. After the death of his father on 16 August 1921, he became King of Yugoslavia. In 1929 he dissolved the Skupština (parliament) and ruled as dictator until 1931. On 10 October 1929 he transformed the Kingdom of SHS into Yugoslavia. He established the Order of Merit of the Yugoslav Crown. The king's remains were deposited in the royal mausoleum on Oplenaci Hill near the town of Topolje.
