Brief History During the DSV, the US Navy lacked a powerful anti-ship weapon. A research center at the University of California proved that the production and use of large-caliber unguided missiles was technically possible. At the Navy's discretion, development was initiated and successfully completed in April 1944. Some references indicate that it was deployed on Okinawa against the Japanese and in the 1950s against the Chinese and North Koreans.
