Origin and development of La.S.100/Pz.Kpfw.II
The first effort to develop a new light tank with a 2 cm automatic gun originated in 6/1931 and was to be an evolutionary development of the German Kleintraktor (Pz.Kpfw.I) program. However, the designs were unsuccessful and the requirement for a tank with a 2 cm gun resulted in new specifications being commissioned for a new type. This happened on 21 January 1934, when the development of a light tank of 6 tons weight category was commissioned (the codename of the project was La.S.100 (Landwirtschaftliche Schlepper 100 - an agricultural tractor with a 100 hp engine). The specifications called for the development of a tank weighing up to 6 tons, the drive was to be provided by a Maybach HL 52 (later HL57) engine, the transmission was to be a ZF SSG 45. Wheel suspension was to be similar to Pz.Kpfw. I, but was to be reinforced. The turret was to be fitted with a 2cm M.G.c/30 gun and MG 34 machine gun.

Originally, a pair of monopoly firms were ordered to develop it. The firm Krupp was to develop the chassis and the firm Daimler-Benz was to develop the superstructure and turret design. However, Henschel and M.A.N. were also subsequently invited to develop the new tank, and to draw up their own designs according to the specifications given. Each of the firms was to produce a wooden model of the vehicle and a pair of prototypes in unpanned steel. The Krupp firm had the first prototype produced in 2/1935, the Henschel firm in 7-8/1935 reported that its prototypes were undergoing test runs at the Kummersdorf test centre at this time.
After reviewing the designs, the platform design by M.A.N. was accepted, the superstructure and turret were developed by Daimler-Benz.
Photographs and construction details of the Henschel prototypes are not known. Minimal data and photographs exist on the prototypes of Krupp.
