Gewehr 1888

History
In the 80's. years of the 19th. century all european armies began to mass-introduced into the loadout repeating rifles. A united Germany in 1884 introduced into the equipment a Mauser 1871/84 caliber 11,15 mm. German military officials, however, have been criticized for the introduction of weapons in the caliber 11,15 mm, when it was already quite clear that the development is going to use the guns of smaller caliber. The significant influence he had on this issue and the fact that the traditional adversary of Germany, France, in 1886, introduced into the armament repeater system of the Lebel, which was not only the caliber of 8 mm (charge 8x50R), but the charge with celoplášťovou shot are performed by the latest novelty - a smokeless gunpowder.
Construction of the new repeating rifles of caliber of 8 mm were commissioned officers of the rifle test commission (Gewehr-Prüfungskommision) in Spandau. The development of the weapon has not been entrusted to any of the plan, because the command of the German army was believed that pušková test, the commission avoids potential design flaws of the weapon.
The commission in the development of weapons came out of the best závěrového mechanism of the rifle Mauser 1871/84, complemented by two front uzamykacími barbs and cartridge box system Mannlicher (for which individual producers the austrian company Österreichrische Waffenfabriks-Gesellschaft levy license fees). From mauserovky was taken and the design neotáčivé the head of the conclusion and the bridge of the receiver. A gas box was filled by the hub, placed in the charge box. Due to the bezokrajové the casing can be a box designed symmetric, which enables its insertion into weapons by the end (unlike the austrian rifles Mannlicher 1886 and 1895, where a cartridge box, for the bullets with the edge, had to be the guns loaded orientovaně). After inserting the last bullet into the chamber of an empty frame under its own weight fell through a hole in the bottom of the cartridge box.
Finished gun, marked "Gewehr 88", was 12. November 1888 introduced into the armament of the imperial army. By design the origin of the weapon is sometimes called a consignment rifle (Kommissionsgewehr); it is often possible to meet even with the incorrect designation of the Mauser 1888, although the Paul Mauser with the gun had nothing to do and on the contrary to its design had a number of objections.
Already shortly after the introduction into the armament showed a serious structural lack of weapons. Starting in the year 1890 there were several cases of ripping a conclusion while shooting, of course, with fatal consequences for the shooter. The examination of the causes established a special commission, which, after two years of investigation came to the most likely cause - in the quick fire shooter after inserting the bullets into the chamber fully neuzamkl conclusion and after you press the shutter not to fire. Shooter therefore he tried the gun again to reload, but because of the full neuzamčení the conclusion not to charge capture just finally got an extractors and he remained in the cartridge chamber. When you try to quick insertion of a new hub the tip of the missiles hit the match bullets in the chamber and initiated by her. Although the cause was clearly the design of the gun, accidents happen a pretext for the campaign, with anti-semitic overtones, against the berlin munitions factory Ludwig Löwe, in whose products causing accidents most often. The number of incidents with weapons, manufactured by Löwe, was given by the vicksburg firearms company produced the largest amount of guns M1888 and therefore there was a higher probability of occurrence of defects. However, the owner of the arms factory Isidor Löwe, as a German Jew, he was automatically the first suspect...

In the early 90's. years 19. century it was found excessive wear in the bore of the main, due to its large leakage. Therefore the groove of the bore of all guns M1888 grew from 0.10 mm to 0.15 mm. The modified weapons were on the chassis, the conclusion indicated by the letter "Z".

In 1903 he was in the arsenal of the adoption of a new charge (8x57JS) zahrocenou shot and significantly improved ballistic properties. Shortly afterwards it was decided to modify the rifle M1888 on this new charge. The depth of the grooves of the bore was increased to 0.30 mm, was enlarged the diameter of the transition cone of the chamber and designed a completely new visor, matching the ballistics of the new rounds. The modified weapons were on the chassis, the conclusion indicated by the letter "S".
In many cases, however, were made to all the described adjustments, with the exception of the deepening of the grooves of the bore of the barrel. These weapons were on the chassis, although marked with the letter “S“, but shooting bullets 8x57JS is not doporučeníhodná.

Gewehr 88/05
In 1905 it was decided to adapt guns M1888 for charging using the charge strip. Gas-was down closed and complemented by a liner with a feeder. On the left inner side of the cartridge mailbox is mounted the retainer shells and on the bridge of the receiver were přiletovány jaw for the deployment of the ammunition belt. The details of construction and přiletování jaws differed according to the specific factory, which adjustment is carried out. Weapons adapted for charging of the strips have been unofficially marked M1888/05 and their modification took place in the years 1906 and 1907.

Gewehr 88/14
During the first world war in the German army showed a lack of modern weapons, and therefore were the most advanced weapons, in the case of repeating rifles, it was a rifle Mauser G98, preferentially allocated prvosledovým units and units of the security were armed with weapons obsolete, or kořistními. Between the arms, re-entered into service, were also rifle M1888, which were, prior to entry to the units adjusted in the same manner as a rifle M1888/05. Weapons, prepared in the years 1915 to 1916, have been unofficially marked M1888/14. Unlike guns M1888/05 were adjustments on these weapons made a lot hruběji and with worse workmanship.
On the implementation of 1888/05 or 1888/14 total was adjusted to about 200 thousand weapons.

The rifle M1888 not developed any new bayonet, but the gun was from the beginning designed to use bodáku of rifles Mauser 1871 or 1871/84. At the time of the first world war on the gun used an all-metal replacement bayonet M88/98.

Design
Rifle M1888 is the cyclic rate with odsuvným cylindrical in conclusion, designed for the cartridges filled with smokeless gunpowder. The conclusion is uzamykán through two opposite broken locking barbs, placed in front of the breech, right behind the neotočnou head conclusion. Both of the barbs to lock into a recess in the socket of the receiver. Flat gas-Mannlicherova system, nacházící under nábojištěm and forming a single unit with the trigger guard of the trigger, and was met the hub, placed in charge of the frame or, from 1905, in charge of the tape.
The barrel is, for the sake of better protecting the shooter from the hot main, throughout the length stored in the sheet metal, cylindrical shell.
Sights open, adjustable. The visor was fitted with three překlopnými slices, with a notch V-shaped. The standard slice was designed for shooting at a distance of 250 meters, a small slice at 350 m, and a big slice was adjustable for shooting at a distance of 450 to 2050 meters.
