Viz historie typu
九七式艦上偵察機 / Kyunana shiki kanjo teisacuki / Type 97 Carrier Reconnaissance Aircraft

In 1935, the Nakajima Hikoki Kabushiki Kaisha submitted a design to meet an Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service (Kaigun Koku Hombu) specifications for a carrier based-reconnaissance aircraft. The design, designated Type S that was being developed in parallel with the Nakajima B5N torpedo-bomber.
The Type S was a low-winged monoplane of all metal construction, with upward folding wings for ease of stowage aboard carriers. Undercarriage was of fixed tailwheel type. Powerplant was by the same Nakajima Hikari 2 radial engine used by early B5Ns
The first of two prototypes was completed in October 1936. After testing and completing carrier qualification, the type was officially adopted as the Type 97 Carrier Reconnaissance Aircraft, or the short designation of C3N1. No production followed, because the B5N was considered adequate in the reconnaissance role.

The two C3N1s were sent to China to perform tests in a combat conditions in 1937. During the early months of the Second Sino-Japanese War, being used operationally with great success for land based reconnaissance missions in the Hankou and Shanghai regions.

Nakajima C3N1
九七式舰上侦察机 / Kjúnana šiki kandžó teisacuki / on-board reconnaissance aircraft, the type 97

History:
Technical specification 10-Shi from the end of the year 1935 requested the japanese naval air force for the products of aviation technology both a torpedo bomber and a reconnaissance aircraft for the aircraft carriers.
The company Nakajima Hikoki Kabushiki Kaisha signed up to the competition to the on-board torpedo bomber. Project bomber was in the factory labor marked the letter ", ", the project worked with a design team under the direction of the engineer Katsuji Nakamury and the result was an airplane Nakajima B5N1.

The second team, led by engineer Yasudo Fukuda, worked on a project of reconnaissance aircraft, this project was a labour marked with the letter "With". The order of the project reconnaissance aircraft was no competition entered directly by the company Nakajima, and a little later was even passed to order the construction of two prototypes.

Technical requirements for reconnaissance aircraft, restricting the span of the aircraft to a maximum of 14 metres, the length of the hull to 10 meters, the Kaigun Koku Hombu further requested the three-member crew, which with regard to navigation over the vast surfaces of the ocean I feel it right. The maximum speed should be at least at the level of 370 km/h and a range of 2 to 200 km. Technical requirements specification 10-Shi to allow system builders a choice of two engine types - the Nakajima Hikari or competitive Mitsubishi Kasai.

Both design teams started work in early 1936, and reconnaissance aircraft, soon got ahead of the game - designers decided to modify the already existing, but as yet untapped project light army bomber Nakajima Ki-31.
To the credit of the management of the factory Nakajima to be said that both the teams along with really a maximum of cooperate, regular exchange of individual design solutions and at the same time, think about the kind of unifikovanost parts and components for both aircraft, this should simplify the production and also the subsequent repair in field conditions, e.g., the power unit even with the engine bed has been for both aircraft is identical.
As the first in the second half of 1936 got into the air and then flew strategic reconnaissance aircraft. The aircraft had to operate from the decks of aircraft carriers, therefore, have been its dimensions limited. Attractions, and for me, a little mystery is a solid chassis, we must remember that the defence of the lightly armed aircraft should be zajména high speed, but then again hard the chassis resisted its resistance of air in flight.

Zalétání both research prototypes have been almost seamless, there were no significant glitches. Both machines were soon sent for trial in the fight to China, the personnel of the aircraft were loved, in China both aircraft successfully served in the years 1937-1940 in the area of Shanghai.

For serial production did not. The fatal blow prototypům C3N1 planted sibling bomber B5N1, its introduction into the armament. In naval aviation, already in the tests, have convinced themselves that the new board bombers are able to perform even an exploratory tasks, and it is therefore unnecessary to introduce into service the two aircraft types, the C3N1 was therefore no longer on nevyráběl. It was only later naval air force found that the bombers had a permanent shortage and, moreover, bombers are not enough of his range on the long reconnaissance flights. It was also the reason why there has been the purchase of modified land-based aircraft Mitsubishi Ki 15 Babs, the navy is knew under the name of C5M (20 ks C5M1 and 30 ks C5M2).
