Leopard 2A6

The development of the successor to the successful Leopard 1 tank began in the late 60's and lasted until the end of the 70's. The results of the development of the main battle tank 70/ MBT-70 had a decisive influence on the development of this battle tank, followed by cooperation with the USA.

In the years 1978 and the beginning of 1979, the test with the first before the serial model followed, and at the end of 1979 the first delivery of the first Leopard 2 tanks with the number of 380 pieces was made. During the years of development, various models were built and tested. Thus, different SRPs and rangefinders were tested. For example, the EMES-13 system has worked with one rangefinder since 1973. It was not until June 1976 that it was decided to purchase a system from the American company Hughes (EMES-15) for connection to a laser rangefinder from the same company. The German Zeiss thermal imager was to be used as a night vision device. Before this thermal camera was available for troops, Leopard 2 was for a transitional period equipped with a passive aiming and observation device PZB-200.
The Leopard 2A6 body has a shaped multi-layer armor. It is divided into three areas: driver's (front), combat (center) and motor (rear). The driver sits in front of the body on the right. It has a one-piece hatch opening to the right and three observation periscopes. The middle can be replaced by a passive night periscope. Part of the carried ammunition is stored to the left of the driver. The 360 ° turret allows you to observe the terrain and aim the cannon, it is in the middle of the vehicle. Commander and shooter are on the right, charger on the left.

Armament:

The 120 mm caliber smooth cannon was developed by Rheinmetall. It shoots two types of ammunition APFSDS-T and HEAT-MP-T, each with a training version. APFSDS-T has an effective range of 2000 m and HEAT-MP-T has a high degree of effectiveness against both unprotected and protected targets. Both types of ammunition with stabilizers have semi-combustible cartridges with a metal bottom, which is thrown into a bag under the butt of the barrel. The armament also includes third-generation APFSDS-T ammunition with a much higher length/diameter ratio. Ammunition for Leopard 2A6 is interchangeable with American (for M1A1). The M1A1 tank cannon is a licensed version of the 120 mm Leopard 2 cannon. When hit, the blast heads upwards. The coupled 7.62 mm Rheinmetall MG 3 machine gun is located to the left of the cannon. The same weapon can be mounted on the charger cover. There are eight smoke grenade launchers on either side of the tower.

Fire Management System:

The Leopard SRP 2A6 includes as its main elements a daily sighting telescope with a laser rangefinder and integrated thermal imager, two stabilized aiming axes, a ballistic computer, a device for automatic tracking of the target with the main weapon after aiming and a stabilized command turret with a PERI R17 sighting telescope.

Battlefield observations are conducted through a large number of large-angle angled mirrors. When the main aiming telescope is violated, the shooting is controlled by a telescopic aiming telescope with 8x magnification type FERO-Z18. This aiming telescope is placed parallel to the axis of the cannon and the view is through a cylindrical screen. It is similarly similar to the TZF-3 aiming telescope in the Leopard 1 tank.

EMES-15, manufactured by STN-Atlas Elektronik, is used as the main aiming telescope. EMES-15 has a 12x magnification with a 5 degree field of view. The binocular daily aiming telescope, thermal imager and laser rangefinder are unified in one construction unit. The structurally identical device is also used in the Leopard 1A5 tank.

EMES-15 contains one observation head stabilized in two planes for day and night observation channel as well as for laser rangefinder.

The stabilization of the cannon and turret is associated with the basic stabilization of the observation head. Connection through the fire control system and other electronic elements of weapon stabilization, followed by secondary stabilization of the turret and cannon, primary stabilization of the observation warhead. The firing blocking device will allow firing only when the aiming axis of EMES and especially the cannon reaches the same position. The angle meter permanently measures the deflection of the weapon system in a horizontal and vertical plane to the position of the aiming axis and guides the turret and cannon back to the same position. Therefore, there is also talk of an automatic target tracking device. The decisive advantage besides high stabilization is that the fire control system, turret and cannon can be controlled independently of the primary stabilization of the EMES observation warhead from the original to another position. This allows the examined assigned values to be automatically transferred from the fire control system without the shooter having to change the aiming point. It only aims to apply and compare the intentional brand. When the weapon system is ready to fire, it will appear in the field of view of the rangefinder and the shooter can fire.

The digitally operating SRP can read from the memory module all the necessary ballistic values of individual types of ammunition for calculation.

The main types of ammunition for combat deployment and practice shooting are available and can be easily adapted to new trends through a change in memory module. In preparation for firing, the crew for each cannon and each type of ammunition must set the individual error found on the first shot into the control panel. In the same way, the air temperature, filling temperature and topographic height of the area of application are previously set. The crosswind value can be set in advance or will be permanently evaluated via the sensor.

From the topographic altitude and air temperature, the computer can calculate approximately the real air pressure, for those ballistic calculations for which they are important. During firing, the sensor indicates the skew of the tower in the transverse axis. Deviation from the horizontal plane leads to excessive deviations in firing and can be compensated by changing the same position of the weapon system to the fire control system. For elements for shooting at moving targets and when shooting while moving, the angular velocity and inclination of the weapon when tracking the target in the horizontal and vertical planes are examined via sensors. The SRP can calculate these elements in height and side, thus adjusting the weapon to a new position.

The CE628 laser from Zeiss - Eltro - optotronik in EMES-15 is integrated as a rangefinder. It is Nd: Yag (Neodynium Yttrium Aluminum Granat Laser). It can follow up to three measurements in four seconds. The measured range is from 200 to 10000 m, the measurement accuracy has a tolerance of 10 m. The distance data are mediated by the SRP and are displayed in the field of view of the shooter. Distances above 4000 m are not automatically taken into account by the CFP and must be set manually. The circular aiming mark is used as the aiming mark. If necessary, it can suppress from two on echoes and provide only the evaluation of the first reflected laser beam to determine the distance.

Targets are targeted with a circular central intent brand. Additional lines can be used, if necessary, to assist in determining distances on the scale and in firing repairs. Lines in the field of view are standard in all Western tank sights, differing in a number of other auxiliary lines.

In the field of view of the thermal imager we find the same lines again, the difference itself is the missing intentional mark. The thermal imager is manufactured by Zeiss - Eltro Optronik based on the standard American model.
The standby time is about 10 minutes, during which time the detector consisting of 120 cadmium-mercury-tellurium-elements (CdHgTe) cools to less than 196 ° C, it is possible to change the magnification of the thermal imager. 12x magnification is used for observation, it can switch to 4x magnification to observe a wide area. In this case, the rectangular frames of the field of view of 12x magnification are displayed, so that the shooter can track the detected targets more quickly and then adjust the magnification. If necessary, the polarity of the indicator can be adjusted. Warm objects are displayed either light or dark, it is in fact the "Negative" of the previous image. Contrast can also be adjusted to improve the visibility of objects.Under normal conditions, the thermal imager has a lighting range far above 2000 m. Surveillance will be significantly reduced in high-density fog and relatively large raindrops. Here a large amount of heat will be absorbed by the objects. Nevertheless, this thermal imager is currently the best available observation device for observation at night and with reduced visibility. It can also help to spot hidden (masked) targets in daylight and should always be on in combat.

Value correction device

The device for correcting values during shooting completes the SRP Leopard 2A6. It consists in principle of integrated structural elements of the main aiming telescope and stabilization of weapons, and one mounted reference mirror at the muzzle of the main cannon. After a long shooting from the cannon, the heat load increases, especially, there may be significant deviations in the setting of the aiming telescope. Mechanical loading can also lead to a change in setting. The device for correcting values during shooting allows the crew without leaving the tank with minimal time to check the settings and, if necessary, correct. To do this, the shooter must turn on the device to correct the values when firing, while the main sight and the cannon come to one fixed angle. The mirror at the muzzle mainly reflects the light beam in the main aiming telescope with respect to the alignment of the adjustment mark, most often with the intentional mark. If this is necessary, the shooter can correct the settings on his control panel. The mechanical causes of deviations can also be eliminated. This is the last case for proper setup it is no reserve and only serves as an emergency solution.
