Cavalier Turbo Mustang III, Piper PE-1 Enforcer, a Piper PA-48 Enforcer


At the end of the sixties the company Cavalier (which now owned the rights to the design of the Mustang) began to explore the possibility of replacing the piston engine Merlin in the Cavalier Mustang II the turboprop engine. The owner of the Cavalieru David Lindsay advocated the use of the engine, Lycoming T55, but was not able to no get.


In 1968 the company built (N6167U) turbo-prop engine of the Rolls-Royce Dart 510 with the performance of the 1,245 kW into the airplane P-51D and launched with him in the flight test under the name Turbo Mustang III. Compared to the previous versions from the Cavalieru this radically increased performance, increased payload and reduced costs for maintenance. Despite numerous offers of the project neither the american Army nor no one from abroad has shown any interest. Eventually Cavalier in 1970 sold the prototype and exclusive rights to the development of the Mustang to the company Piper Aircraft Corporation. 4. November 1970, was the prototype of the Turbo Mustang III delivered to the Piper factory in Vero Beach.


At that time, the experience of the US from Vietnam have shown that there is a need for an economical, powerful aircraft for close support and counter-insurgency operations, which could be bundled allied states in the framework of the MAP. This project was named the Pave Coin. In order to get a contract company Piper has taken a much more ambitious conversion, than was the Turbo Mustang - one one-seat F-51D and one two-seat TF-51D was equipped with a turboprop engine, Lycoming T55-L-9 on the performance of 1831 kW. The project was named Enforcer. For the first time the Enforcer flew 19. April 1971. In that time, the project Enforcer helped even the founder of Cavalieru David Lindsay, whose company in the same year, ceased to exist.


One-seat plane was factory marked as PE-1, the registration of the FAA N201PE, two-seater PE-2 was registered N202PE. The Enforcer was equipped with a plastic breastplate and samotěsnícími tanks and as well as the Mustang II had the fuel tank to the ends of the wings. A typical "cognitive element" of the Mustang, the catcher of the air under the fuselage, was completely removed and on the left side of the fuselage before the cabin there is a large exhaust. The USAF tested the PE-1 in 1971 and the aircraft met all the expectations, but the USAF did not manifest interest. Congress, however, was relatively efficient aircraft very intrigued by, and in September 1981 in favor of pushing the air force to the conclusion of the contract on two new prototypes with the factory designation PA-48 Enforcer, which took off 9. 4. 1983 and 8. 7. 1983. Both machines were tested in August 1984 at air bases Eglin and Edwards. For the fighter pilots of the air force, who is tested, it was a matter of prestige to fly on a jet machines, and, of course, preferred a huge Fairchild a-10 Thunderbolt II. Despite the successful tests so the air force again, the Enforcer refused and the aircraft was at the end of 1986 phased out. If the machine tested also army pilots, who would perhaps have proved a similar machine more to appreciate, everything could be otherwise.


According to some reports, perhaps the Philippine Air Force considered buying Enforcers as a replacement for your T-28 Trojan. Order up to 48 machines, however, should be conditional on the success of the project in the choice of the USAF, and for Piper, it was too risky to start production on the basis of small orders PAF.


There are still three of the four prototypes: the original PE-1 (N201PE) is still rozebraný in stock, PA-48 N482PE me would be to Edwards AFB and awaiting renovation, the PA-48 N481PE (48-350001) was renovated and now should be in the "Prototype Hangar" of the National museum of the USAF at the Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton.
