After graduating from the real gymnasium in Prague was in June 1916 drafted and as a one-year volunteer came to Infantry-Regiment Nr. 88, from October 1916 he commanded a platoon on the Russian and from April 1917 on the Italian front, where he was twice wounded, war ended in the rank of lieutenant and commander of the protiplynové units.
