12,8 cm Flak 40

The 12.8 cm Flak 40 was the largest and most powerful anti-aircraft gun of World War II. Its effect was devastating to both air and ground targets. Its total weight approaching seventeen tons predestined its use in static operational positions. As the Allies advanced into German territory, it began to be used with devastating effect against ground targets.Development began as early as 1936 on the basis of the successful 8.8 cm flak. The first prototype saw the light of day a year later, but the first examples did not reach the troops until the end of 1941. The reason for this delay was the skeletal and technological complications arising from the fact that the Hundred and Twenty-eight was originally designed on the model of the Eighty-eight as a fully mobile weapon. The main problem was the overall weight of the weapon and its dimensions. During transport the barrel had to be disassembled and reassembled after relocation, which made the whole
the weapon in field conditions, which made it unusable in the field. Therefore, the mobile concept of the weapon was abandoned. The compromise was a version for placing on railroad cars in a number of about 200 pieces.

In August 1944 there were about 450 of these in service. Both aiming and loading were electrically controlled. Their high silhouette made them highly vulnerable and difficult to camouflage. The first artillery of the city of Berlin to open fire against the advancing Soviet troops was the Hundred and Twenty-eight placed in a flakturm on the eastern outskirts of Berlin.

Produkovane modely
12,8 cm Flak 40
Heavy anti-aircraft gun, originally conceived as a mobile gun, but mostly used in static firing position.

12,8 cm Flakzwilling 40
Sparred singlesided hundred-foot tubes mounted on flakturms instead of the planned 15 cm
flaks for which the towers were originally designed. By the end of the war only 34 were made
of the twins. The combat weight of the set was around 27 000 kg.

12,8 cm Flak 45
A rebuild of the Flak 40 with a thickened chamber, extended barrel with added muzzle brake.
Only one prototype was produced by the end of the war

12,8 cm PAK 44
Although a bit off topic but it belongs here.
The results of the development of the 12.8 cm Flak 40 were used in the construction of the 12.8 cm PAK 44. It was an attempt at a double barrelled field gun. It was the most useful anti-tank gun of WWII but its large weight (10,000 kg) made it difficult to use in field conditions.

Hello. I would like to inform you about one more type of 12,8 cm Flak, the 44 pattern. It is a direct descent from the pattern 40. And it was directly in the production process that various improvements and modifications were made, and so the 12.8cm Flak 44 was created. The most noticeable difference is in the receiver, which has been lightened considerably with a smaller diameter cone. Be careful not to confuse this with the crossguard of the first Flak 40! There are also noticeable changes to the cuff in the middle of the barrel and other minor changes (simplifications).

in the second picture it is not Flak 40 (it is the one marked 128-2.jpg) but Flakzwiling 40, ie a double-barreled version of the cannon from this topic. It is a special weapon, even if only produced in small quantities, and since 1942 it has been used to defend Berlin, you should establish a separate topic for it. The whole name is 12.8 cm FLugabwehrkanonezwilling 40 and the parameters are different mainly in weight and rate of fire.
The first photo shows a timer that sets the height at which the grenade explodes.
