History:

According to the directive of the General Staff of 10.7.1962 (№ 140547), the 12th Special Purpose Brigade (v.no. 64406) was established. For manning, officers, privates and sergeants of reconnaissance units, special forces units and OSNAZ of the Transcaucasian Military District were sent. The first commander of the 12th Brigade was appointed Colonel Ivan Ivanovich Geleverja, an officer with extensive front-line experience gained in the Great Patriotic War. The place of permanent deployment of the brigade became the city of Lagodechi in the Georgian SSR.

An order of the General Staff of the USSR established the annual celebration of the brigade's anniversary on 5 December.

According to the order № 029 MO USSR of December 26, 1964, the commander of the ZakVO troops, Army General Stutchenko presented the brigade's combat battalion to the brigade commander, Colonel I. I. Geleverj. In 1970, the members of the brigade were rewarded for their achievements in combat and political training with an honorary diploma of the Central Committee of the CPSU, in 1972 - with the Jubilee Medal of the Central Committee of the CPSU.

In February 1973, members of the brigade participated in the exercise "Snow Pass". The explorers of the brigade successfully coped with the task, showed high morale and fighting quality, courage, perseverance and willingness to perform tasks in difficult situations. From 14 to 20 June of the same year, the brigade was involved in a bilateral military exercise led by the USSR Minister of Defense. The members demonstrated a high level of combat training. In 1973 the unit was awarded a diploma by the USSR Minister of Defence.

In accordance with the directive of the General Staff of the USSR № 313/02/90 dated 03.04.1978, the 12th Special Purpose Brigade was renamed: 12th Independent Special Purpose Brigade.

In 1980, part of the brigade was transferred to the 173rd Independent Special Purpose Detachment (Directive № 313/02505 of the General Staff of 12 May 1980). In 1984 this unit was transferred to the operational command of the 40th All-Union Army of Turkmenistan. As part of the 40th Army, the 173rd Special Purpose Detachment participated in combat operations in Afghanistan. It was augmented by officers of the 12th Brigade prior to its deployment to Afghanistan in February 1984. Members of the detachment consisted primarily of Caucasian Muslims. Its first commander was appointed J. Sharipov. In the spring of 1985, the 173rd Detachment organizationally joined the 22nd Independent Special Purpose Brigade and was stationed in Gilmend Province. From the beginning of the fighting until its withdrawal to the Soviet Union, the detachment occupied a leading position in military operations in the 40th Army. At the same time, casualties were small compared to other Special Forces units. After the withdrawal from Afghanistan in 1988, the 173rd was part of the 22nd Independent Special Purpose Brigade.

The 12th Independent Special Purpose Brigade, stationed in the Transcaucasian Military District, was involved in restoring constitutional order in the region and fighting gangs. In November and December 1988, constitutional order was restored in the city of Zagatala (Azerbaijan SSR) by the actions of three detachments of the brigade. In 1989, the brigade's reconnaissance groups carried out tasks such as finding and destroying illegal training centres preparing for gang warfare in the vicinity of the towns of Kirovakan, Leninakan, Pambak (Armenian SSR). In April 1989, members of the brigade took part in the settlement of national disputes in South Ossetia (Chkhinvali, Georgian SSR).

More than 150 soldiers of the brigade were awarded for exemplary performance of duties. During its stay in the Transcaucasian Military District, the brigade received the temporary red banner of the Military Council of the District 16 times.

In 1992, the 12th Independent Special Purpose Brigade, in accordance with the General Staff Directive № 314/1/0195 of 3 March 1992, moved to the composition of the Ural Military District, with a permanent location in the city of Asbest, Sverdlovsk Oblast.

1st Chechen:
In January-April 1995, the 33rd Special Purpose Detachment of the 12th Brigade was sent to the conflict area in Chechnya. The Homeland highly appreciated the contribution of the military intelligence officers in the fight against international terrorism: 112 members of the unit were awarded orders and medals.

The title Hero of Russia was awarded to Lieutenant Commander Vladislav Aleksandrovich Dolonin (posthumously). He died on March 3, 1995 in the Chechen town of Gudermes. On March 3, a reconnaissance detachment, which functioned as part of Lieutenant Dolonin's group, was tasked with surveying roads during the withdrawal of the Northwest Group in the Gudermes area. The scouts uncovered several gang defensive lines. But the Spetsnaz themselves were spotted by the enemy. A fight began in which a considerable numerical advantage was on the side of the "ghosts", who held the more advantageous position. This allowed them to surround the troop with a ring from which it was difficult to escape. Lieutenant Commander V.L. Dolonin, after assessing the situation, decided: during his fire, his squad, will try to destroy the dominant position of the bandits on the high ground, from which it is possible to control the area, and have an open way out of the encirclement. During the desperate assault on the high ground, Dolonin was wounded in the leg, but did not lose his composure. He knew that, first, his advantageous position now allowed his comrades to leave in an organized manner and without loss, and second, the enemy would not be able to pursue the detachment while it remained under aimed fire. And another thought did not leave him; wounded in the leg, he would be an unnecessary obstacle to a rapid breakthrough from the field. He - wounded and big, heavy - would have to be carried out of the area by at least four soldiers. "Who will cover the retreat?"... Dolonin lay down behind his machine gun, ordering, "Everybody out! I'm covering! ". Machine-gun fire, covering the retreat of his comrades. A fatal head wound brought about a fateful event in the amazing life of Lieutenant V.L. Dolonin...

A month before his death, Lieutenant V.A. Dolonin was awarded the medal "For valor". The list of awards said: "Lieutenant V.A. Dolonin was a member of the federal forces in Chechnya from January 19 to March 3. During the fighting in Grozny, the officer showed a model of courage, bravery and heroism. On January 29, 1995, during the attack on the bridge over the Sunzha River, having strategic importance, Lieutenant Dolonin skillfully and consistently controlled the actions of his subordinates, without losing members, ensured the capture of high-rise buildings in close proximity to the bridge, organized heavy fire on the firing positions defended by the people of Dudayev, giving them the ability to defend themselves from the federal troops... During the fight, he personally destroyed two machine gun nests, one grenade launcher and a few fighters, with no casualties among his own...

2nd Chechen:

From 14 August 1999, members of the 33rd Independent Special Purpose Detachment of the 12th Brigade actively participated in counter-terrorist operations during the armed conflict in the Republic of Dagestan near the village of Botlich. For the successful execution of combat missions in 1999, 120 soldiers were awarded state decorations. 5 soldiers of the unit were killed. 17 people were wounded. The title of Hero of the Russian Federation for courage and heroism during combat missions was awarded to Junior Sergeant Dmitry Aleksandrovich Shektaev (posthumously), Major Shamil Zhalilovich Kokinaev (later rank of Lieutenant Colonel), Major Sergei Viktorovich Uzhentsev. The title Hero of Russia was awarded to Captain Mikhail Konstantinovich Churkin (posthumously).

Since April 1, 2000, the 33rd Detachment has been in the Chechen Republic (Engenoj locality), where it participated in counterinsurgency operations. For successful completion of combat missions many soldiers received state awards: in 2000 - 175 people, in 2001 - 108 people, in 2002-2003 - 82 people, in 2004 - 575 people. There were also losses.
