HISTORY (part 1)

The 9th SS-Panzer-Division Hohenstaufen was formed in December 1942 and subsequently trained at Maille le Camp in France. Initially, the division bore the designation SS-Panzer-Division Hohenstaufen, but on October 22, 1943 it was redesignated the 9th SS-Panzer-Division Hohenstaufen.

Then, after several training movements in France, her training was terminated in the spring of 1944. As a result of the deteriorating situation on the Eastern Front, where 1. tank army found himself surrounded, decided OKW send to action II. SS tank corps to break the siege 1. tank army. In the swampy terrain, the 9th SS Tank Division of the Hohenstaufen and 10. tank division SS Frundsberg managed to establish contact with the city of Buczacz with 6. tank division belonging to I. to the SS Leibstandarte tank corps and subsequently liberate the besieged units.

After this action, the 9th Panzer Division SS Hohenstaufen was sent north to carry out a relief attack towards Tarnopol, which was also surrounded by Soviet troops. Together with the Friebe Tank Group (Panzerverband Friebe), the division tried to make its way to Tarnopol. However, due to the worsening weather and the very strong resistance of the Soviets, this action ended in failure. Only a few soldiers managed to escape from Tarnopol and return to their own lines.

In the following weeks and months, the 9th SS Hohenstaufen Tank Division was re-assigned to II. SS tank corps and formed a backup Army Groups Northern Ukraine until June 26, 1944, when the division was sent to France.

After a week's movement across France, exposed to constant Allied air strikes, the division finally reached the area where the attack on the Allied bridgehead was to begin at the end of June. On June 26, the British began attempts to occupy Caen, thus completely disrupting German plans. The place of attack against the beaches is II. the SS tank corps turned to the right and during the constant attacks of Allied aircraft deployed in the area west of Caen to help the German troops deployed there. This battle lasted until the end of the first week and thus represented the toughest fighting in the West.
The 9th Hohenstaufen Tank Division had 1,200 dead, wounded and missing in the fighting at Caen. Subsequently, it began to be replaced at positions near Caen 277. infantry division and this exchange of "guards" was completed on July 10, 1944.

The division was withdrawn to the reserve for an attack in the Caen area, which began on July 8, 1944. The strongest fighting broke out in the area of Eterville, Maltot and strategic elevations 112 (Hill no. 112).
Eterville was forever occupied, but elevation 112, after changing "owners" several times, was eventually occupied by the 9th SS Hohenstaufen Tank Division, which replaced the heavily decimated 10. tank division SS Frundsberg. The battle ended on July 8, and the division was again withdrawn to the reserve for another new attack, which followed on July 15, 1944. The "Frundsberg" division replaced the Hohenstaufen division.
On July 16, fierce fighting broke out in the vicinity of elevation 113, located west of elevation 112. Due to heavy losses, III. battalion of the tank grenadiers SS 19 disbanded and its members used to heal the losses of the remaining two battalions of the regiment.
On July 18, the Allies launched an attack northeast of Caen and soon managed to disrupt the lines of German divisions stationed there.

The 9th SS Hohenstaufen Panzer Division was therefore withdrawn from the front line, reorganized (both regiments of SS tank grenadiers were merged and subsequently formed the Panzergrenadier-Regiment SS Hohenstaufen) and moved east under operational command I. SS Leibstandarte and again acted as a backup for the expected crisis. On July 25, the division was again ready to fight and was sent to the area south of Caen to heal the lines 272. infantry division. The next day, with the exception of elevation 72 and around Verrieres, the line was restored.

HISTORY (Part 2)

The following weeks of the division were marked by hard fighting. On August 1, 1944, the 9th SS Hohenstaufen Tank Division was withdrawn from the line and placed under command II. SS Tank Corps to try to resolve the crisis in the Beny-Bocage area. After a week of hard fighting, the British advance was halted, and the following week, on August 13, a gradual move to the Putanges area began, which was completed three days later.
The rapid disintegration of the front line in other places prevented the deployment of the division from new positions, and therefore followed the order to move to the Vimoutiers area. Fighting ensued around Merri and Trun (northeast side of the Falai Pocket), where Canadian and Polish troops tried to break through to the south. In the following days, the division focused on maintaining a narrow retreat route leading from the Falais pocket. The battle ended on August 21, 1944. The division did very well in the fighting in the Falais pocket and its commander Friedrich Wilhelm Bock for it received Oak branches to the Knight crosses.

This was followed by a rapid retreat across France and Belgium, during which the division took part in several detention battles at Orbec, Bourg-Achard, Duclair, Laon and Cambrai. The division was then sent to Arnhem to rest and replenish the conditions, where it arrived on September 9.
The combat force of the 9th SS Hohenstaufen Tank Division at that time numbered only 6,000-7,000 men from the original 15,898, which it had on June 30, 1944. It was planned to supplement the division's units in Germany, and some of its units were already on their way to Germany.

But on September 17, 1944, the Allied Operation Market-Garden was launched. The current strength of the division was therefore even lower than the above figure at the beginning of this operation.
The division operated mainly west of Arnhem and prevented British forces from joining forces with groups of "Red Devils" from 1. airborne divisions, which were surrounded in Arnhem, thus preventing the Allies from achieving the main goal of the operation, which was to secure a solid bridgehead on the Rhine.
After the initial fighting, the division alongside the Wehrmacht (Gruppe von Tettau and others) successfully engaged in pushing the main Polish-British troops into the perimeter in Oosterbeek west of Arnhem, from where the remnants of the British evacuated across the Rhine on the night of September 25-26. Arnhem became a great victory for the 9th SS Hohenstaufen Tank Division.

HISTORY (Part 3)

The division then moved to Germany to replenish, first to Siegen, but since this area was not suitable for combat training of the tank division, it moved to the Paderborn-Münster area.
On December 12, 1944, the division moved to Münstereifel, where it became a reserve for Operation "Herbstnebel" (its code name was changed to "Wacht am Rhein" at the end of November) - an offensive in the Ardennes.

The 9th SS Hohenstaufen Tank Division was moved south from Blankenheim and then to the Stadtkyll-Juenkerath-Blankenheim area. At first he took part in events in the Ardennes only Tank Artillery Regiment SS 9 and Tank Reconnaissance Battalion SS 9, but after the occupation of the city of St. Vith joined the rest of the division. The first designated targets were achieved, the occupation of the villages of Recht and Vielsalm, but the activity of the US Air Force and the growing resistance of ground troops slowed the division's progress until it came to a complete stop on the line of villages Brages and Vaux-Chavanne.
On December 31, 1944, the division was sent south, where it took over the position after 12. People's Grenadier Division to increase pressure on the besieged city of Bastogne.
However, after minor initial successes during the night of January 3-4, the division's attack, facing stubborn resistance from defenders and strong air strikes, came to a halt. Until January 7, when Hitler ordered a retreat on the Dochamps-Longchamps line, the division held these positions at the cost of heavy losses. Since then, the division has helped keep through 16 January 1945 through roads to the front units 5. tank army, when most of these units managed to withdraw to the starting line. During these battles, the focus was on the American 1. army city Sterpigny. However, the division successfully withstood the pressure of the Americans. During the night of January 17-18, the defensive line was withdrawn to the level of the German border, and the division engaged in detention during the retreat to this line.

HISTORY (part 4)

At the end of January 1945, the division moved to the Kaufenheim-Mayen area to replenish the stock. After increasing the threat of a breakthrough along the entire length of the Eastern Front sent the German High Command of the Armed Forces a number of troops to the east to help stop the Soviet advance across Hungary and liberate the besieged troops in the Hungarian capital Budapest - in particular 8. cavalry division SS Florian Geyer and 22. SS Maria Theresa Volunteer Cavalry Division.
At the end of February, the division arrived in Falubattyan, Hungary, and was ready for an attack scheduled for March 6, 1945. Unfortunately, due to muddy roads, the division failed to move to its starting positions for the attack in time. 2 encountered the same problems. tank division SS Das Reich and so II. the SS tank corps was unable to launch an attack in the allotted time.
The operation soon stopped due to bad weather and stubborn resistance from the Russians, especially in the area in front of the city of Sarosd. On March 16, the Soviets broke through the defensive line IV. tank corps SS to the north of Lake Velencz and began to threaten 6. tank army SS.
The 9th SS Panzer Division Hohenstaufen gradually retreated through Jeno, Berhida, Liter, Nemesvamos, Hidekut, and to Mencseli. During its retreat, the rear troops of the division had to fight hard with the invading Red Army troops, especially when providing a retreat route for 5. tank division SS Wiking, 1. tank division and 3. tank division and for the remains 44. Reich Grenadier Division Hoch- und Deutschmeister during their retreat from Stuhlweissenburg.
Another Russian offensive forced the division to retreat via Zalaapati, Sojtor and Paka to the Reichsschutzstellung near Radkersburg.

The last action for the division came on April 26, 1945, when it received an order to move to the Amstetten area, where on May 1, 1945 it received an order to move to the Enns-Steyr-Amstetten area and to stop the American advance without using force. by the Western Allies. After several successful negotiations, on May 8, 1945, the 9th SS Hohenstaufen Panzer Division embarked on a journey into American captivity, and the war finally survived for the surviving soldiers.
