History:
First I have to mention about the legendary German bomber Dornier do 17, which was in the initial phase of fighting by units of the Luftwaffe greatly expanded. This bomber had its positive aspects, but bound to have this design and cons. Probably the biggest asset was its high speed, which have done even with the older fighters of the adversary. On the contrary, among the vices belonged to a small cabin for three crew and weak armament. Not very effective armament began to manifest itself with the advent of more powerful enemy fighter aircraft. Engineer Claude Dornier tried these inappropriate features removed, enlarged the cabin for the crew, this could increase the number of shooters. So arise the new version of The 17S To 17U, and finally do 17Z, which was powered by the jumo Bramo 323A-1. These bombers were much more effective than the previous version.

The success of these versions, the Dornier tried to use even for export purposes and so offers this aircraft, with the consent of the Reich ministry of aviation, under the designation Dornier do 215 all potential customers. Prototype To 215V-1 was paraded many of the military commissions.

One possible customer was Yugoslavia, which had previously bought twenty ranking 17K and at the same time with these machines has purchased the rights to their licensed production. Yugoslavs could compare their aircraft with a new prototype To 215V-2, which was powered by the French dvouhvězdicovými engines Gnóme-Rhône 14N. The new aircraft had similar performance as they had already used "sedmnácky" and so Yugoslavs these new bombers did not order.

Dornier, decided that the performances of the new aircraft will increase and the way to increase performance was the installation of terraced engines Daimler Benz DB-601A. Dornier do supply the engines directly enforced. With the new engines performance really improved and so the third prototype To 215V-3 has already aroused considerable interest among Swedish purchasing commission. The swedes in 1938 looking for a suitable replacement for the French cancelled order Breguetů 694. Agreed order on 18 Dornierů with the designation of The 215A-1, the delivery never took place, because the Luftwaffe needed at the end of 1939 every combat-capable plane. Factory Dornier these aircraft finished as The 215B-0 and B-1 and the Luftwaffe is included in your loadout in 1940 as a long-range reconnaissance. The Luftwaffe from march 1940 began to also receive a slightly improved version In the 215B-4. Improve touched in particular equipment, which has been extended for a further two defensive machine guns MG-15, these adjustments were carried out at airports earlier version In the 215B-1, further improvement related to the installed cameras.

The supply of "dvěstěpatnáctek" ended in 1941. The Luftwaffe had yet to get a bomber version In the 215B-2, but since its production was abandoned. To complete the enumeration of the versions we lack a version of the B-3, that was made only in two copies and together with several other types, was sent in 1940 to the USSR.

In 1940 it was adapted a few Into the 215B-4 for night fighting. Modification consisted of the installation of a new slightly zašpičatěné non-glazed nose, in which were installed four fixed machine guns, two cannons and a detector of infrared radiation Spanner-Anlage. This detector was relatively little effective, but that all changed in 1941, mounting the radar FuG 202, the modified aircraft were designated as The 215B-5 and have become quite an effective weapon against british night bombers. In the II/NJG 1 operational flying until 1944. Nepřestavěné B-4 were withdrawn from the front in 1942, and then got Hungary, which is used for reconnaissance flights over the USSR.
