Unsuccessful tanks
Originally, the Kopřivnice-based company Ringhoffer-Tatra started construction work on the development of two pieces of the Combined Assault Vehicle (KÚV), according to the order of MNO ref. 153 Taj.-V/3. department 1932, on the condition that the rotating tower and weapons will be developed and delivered by the Pilsen-based Škoda. The condition of the order was also the delivery date of these two chassis on September 30, 1933. The term combined was in this case intended for a tracked version of the chassis, which could move either on wheels or on belts. It was a fashionable technical-tactical consideration of the possibility of accelerated movement on wheels over longer distances and the use of a crawler chassis for off-road driving. Due to the persistent problems with the technical solution of KÚV, the MNO itself is changing its opinion and under ref. 607 Taj.-III-1934 requires April 16, 1934 delivery of two pieces of pure crawler chassis T-III tank. At the same time, it changed its requirements for tank armor. The change in the assignment was based on a new idea of the division of tasks of attack vehicles on the battlefield. The Tatra construction was to correspond to III. degree of categorization of the Czechoslovak attack vehicle. This quality class included tanks designed to fight tanks and to break through field pre-prepared defensive positions. In the company's internal documents, this vehicle appears under the designation Tatra type 78 (type 78, T-78) and in business correspondence with the Czechoslovak Military Administration (VS), the designation T-III is used. In March 1936, the assembly of prototypes with serial numbers 20584 and 20585 was completed. The Commission, sent to VTLÚ on 27 June of the same year, ascertained the stage of development of both prototypes and, at the same time, finally decided on the deployment of the internal equipment. The prototypes are completed on October 9, 1936, and after a technical inspection, a list of defects is issued, which must be removed. Factory representative inž. Uebelacker requested an extension of the deadline for the completion of both vehicles until December 15, 1936. From Pilsen Skoda arrived one complete tank tower, which was designed as a single for all developed tanks of the III series.

Driving and technical tests, under the leadership of Capt. rammer. Karel Dvořák, were launched on February 22, 1937, and by March 25, the prototype without a tower had traveled 363 km, and by March 11, the prototype with a tower had traveled 460 km. Both machines suffered from numerous failures. After the repairs, the tests were to continue until June 15, but even after this date, another test drive is carried out in November. VTLÚ criticized Tatrovce for five basic shortcomings and demands their elimination. Test drives under the supervision of VS continue in the following year. They are often interrupted and the problems resolved, yet both prototypes suffered from permanent deficiencies in cooling, excessive stress on the drive mechanisms and huge fuel and oil consumption.

As of May 31, 1937, Capt. Dvořák III. Department of VTLÚ that with the prototype, which is assigned a military registration number 13,640, is driven from the beginning of the tests 1,030 km and with the number 13,641 is achieved 1,273 km. Prototypes never passed full-fledged military tests.

At the end of September 1938, both machines were handed over to the Vyškov Attack Vehicle Training Center (UÚV) and were left there as demonstration vehicles of medium tanks until a decision was made to liquidate them.

By decree no. 28049 Taj.-V/3. Dept.-1938, the MNO decided to liquidate the order and purchase both prototypes for an amount reaching CZK 1,600,000. Even before this date, the 3rd Department of the General Staff decided to scrap one of the prototypes. It is not known whether this happened before March 15, 1939. However, one thing is certain - based on the photographs published here - one machine was studied and accepted by the Wehrmacht for testing.
